I gave the Browning Hi-Power and Ruger Service Six some exercise today, both of them shot great. The Service Six is a stainless .38 Special from 1988, last year for the Six series. The Hi-Power was made in 2016 and I bought it brand new. The trigger is a bit gritty, which should smooth out with use. Will post pics when I get around to cleaning them.

I think the HP is one of the most elegant pistols ever. I've had a couple but sold both because of hammer bite.

Totally agree with you, I've loved the Grand Puissance ever since I was a kid. I have huge hands, a high grip, and my pistol has the long hammer spur. Racking the slide, it looks like the hammer is going to put a nice crater in my hand when the gun fires yet that has never happened.

I gave the Service Six some exercise yesterday and was reminded why the Six series are my favorite wheelguns of all time. Ruger absolutely nailed it with this gun in terms of dimensions and ergonomics, perfect size and weight for shooting healthy .38 Specials and mild .357's. My S&W 10-5 is an excellent revolver but the skinny barrel will jump when you fire +P's. The heavy barrel K-frames have the opposite problem, way too thick and front heavy for my taste. My Service Six is one revolver that is not getting sold!

I agree, the six series Ruger revolvers are just about perfect for heavy .38 specials and mild to mid range .357's. The old K-frame S&W revolvers are the same.
Below is a 4" Security Six on the left and an early production 4" S&W M66, on the right. Feel and balance are identical.

While I respect the rugged ruger, I prefer the finish of the S&W. The only thing I don’t like about the ruger is all the sharp edges they leave on their revolvers. Other than that, it is a functional asskicker.
I had a Model 66-1 but I sold it...stupid stupid stupid

Ok, I’m late to the game on this thread, but if I were to choose 3 handguns it would be...

1911
4” S&W 686
4” S&W model 57 (41 Mag) why a 41 and not a 44? Because I’ve been fighting a flinch, I’ll freely admit it. For some reason I started tightening my grip when squeezing the trigger and my 41 got me through with focused training and slightly milder recoil. The 41 mag is a pleasure to shoot and it will kill things just as dead as a 44.

Seems to me there aren’t many things those three handguns couldn’t handle. All of which are in my safe at the moment:). Glad I stumbled upon this thread, haven’t talked Guns in a while. Howdy fellers

Glad to see you jump in.
It would be hard to argue with your choices. The ability to add a .22lr conversion to the 1911 certainly increases it's value in the bang for the buck category.
The 686 is nice for it's ability to handle both the .38 S and .357 M.
The .41 M is enough gun for anything most of us will ever encounter.
Nice trio.

A 22lr/22mag combo Super Single 6 with a 6-7" barrel for small game. (Not purchased yet)

My Sig P250 Compact in .40S&W (W/drop-in .357 Sig barrel) EDC

A BFR .30-30 or .45-70 with a 10.5-12" barrel for bigger fare (with a fixed 4x scope).

I really like the Toklat in .454, but the other members of my house probably wouldn't. The .30-30 would be much more manageable, while still having decent thump.

My best friend is about to become a three gun guy. He already has a Sig P320 for general purpose/home defense and a 6" Ruger GP-100 for when you really need to put the hurtin' on something. Now, is pondering a snub nose .38 for concealed carry. I'm going to let him borrow my S&W 637 for awhile and see how he likes it.

My three favorite handguns (that I have) are a S&W model 65 M&P in .357, a Ruger Super Redhawk with scope and a 9.5" barrel, and my carry gun which is an AMT Backup in .380.
I rarely shoot anything nowadays. I'm close to a range (50' out my back door) so no excuses, just busy with other stuff. I hunt deer but that's not a lot of shooting. (a box of 20 lasts me 3 years usually)
