So I know this topic has been absolutely beaten to death all over this forum but all I ask is that you take pity on the new guy and help me out here.

Long story short I just picked up an 026 Pro, it was filthy and needed a muffler but had a squeaky clean bore and great compression so I gave it a deep clean and have a used stock muffler on the way. I'm looking to get as much power out of it, in as little time, and with as few tools as I can while while still having a good balance of durability and power.

What exactly is the current consensus on techniques and specs for a muffler only modding job for these 026 pro's that are more or less Idiot-Proof?

Easiest is a square hole in the front, slide screen under heat guard, and drill a new set screw hole towards the PTO side of the case. I’ll see if I got a pic.

I said easiest, not best. I added a piece of steel to the PTO side front with a few tack welds.

Sorry, I don’t have a pic from the inside. I no longer do them this way, a side outlet is quieter with same performance increase.

Side exits are quieter, a 3/4" dia hole without a screen seems adequate for a non ported cylinder, I make my ported ones 7/8" and a bit ovaled for the ported ones.

I ran that large opening muffler on the 026pro when it was just advanced but not ported and it alone (with the advanced timing) really woke that saw up.

Ported, that saw is a 50cc beast

As soon as you look at a stock muffler (apart) you will see very easy pickins’ on the front cover. Even if you choose to leave the spark arrestor intact. Side exits will require considerably more effort. I always hated the exhaust barfing onto the case. Nasty stains will never come clean.

I've had a number of 026 models and it is my favorite chainsaw of all time. That said, I've never modded the muffler on one. They seem great stock so I never messed with it. I have done a lot of muffler mods on other saws.

If you think they are great stock (particularly if it's the muffler with the one 5/16 outlet) you need to do muffler mod and advance the spark!
I also get rid of the flocked style air filter and trim the stop at the back of the choke flap which allows it to open up wider. Seems to help!
