Local sawmill guy told me some story's he hit what he guessed was a bowling ball in a big pine once it caught on the blade and just vaporized it he thought the mill had blown up a big white cloud of chalky dust split the pine almost in half.

The local tree guy has a 22 ton splitter almost just like mine (different make). I was over there the other day and I looked at the splitting wedge on his. There were about 4 good size divots in it (mine is still like a knife), so I figure the wood they are splitting must have had lots of metal in it.

I estimate I've split about 30 cord with mine, and no damage to the wedge yet! Fingers crossed!

Dang yard trees!!

Was cutting a monstrous maple for a friend, 36", full comp, fresh sharpening

Third cut went from chips to dust, rpm jumped out the house to four stroking.

Chain was toast!!!

Put another one, went 12" to either side, luckily didn't hit anything. Buddy says aren't you going to finish that third cut???

Nope , already lost money on this favor!!

I think he was pissed?? Two years later it is still laying there, too big to move

I built a big inverted splitter for our 297 Cat, runs off of high flow.

I'll just pinch it off like a big turd

I always cringe when I have to cut a yard tree, I seem to be most lucky cutting the tree off very low to the ground, bar just clearing the terra firma. But even then I have hit chain and steel wire, likely someone had tied a dog or pet to the tree and the wood just grows over it in time. If we have a machine capable of lifting a 5-6' section of the butt it goes directly to the landfill though I still occasionally find junk higher up like clothesline attachments and even a complete, though aluminum, roller and frame embedded in a 30" dia spruce.

It was a 68 drive link chain, and i counted 15 cutters completely missing.

Sorry for your loss.

Looks like only the cutters on the Right side? Maybe turn the saw around, move over an inch or so, and finish the cut. Then split with wedges to find the culprit.

Lumber Wizard is probably a good investment if you cut up a lot of yard trees. http://wizdist.com/lumberwiz.shtml
Another site recommended the Garrett SuperWand http://www.garrett.com/securitysite/security_hand_held_accessories.aspx
