I've got a somewhat part time under the radar job because Illinois says I'm just a incompetent teenager and it would be unsafe to pay me to use a drill

Of all the illegal things I've seen teenagers do, working is the coolest!

Welcome aboard!

Two questions ....... Where at in Illinois and what in the hell is it with all these kids and "home-schooling"🤔
We started homeschooling when the school corporation told me we had to put my 2nd grade Son on medication. They said he wouldn't sit still in front of the computer over half the day. lol you don't say. The options were medication or suspension, we chose a different one. My wife was actually working for the school at the time. She quit and started home schooling after Christmas break, never looked back. It's not for everyone, but we love it.

We are at this tipping point too. My boys actually go to a private, country Lutheran school, but it’s expensive and although the education is great and faith based, the teachers who are unmarried women without children of their own, have a disconnect when it comes to young boys behavior. They haven’t actually stated that my youngest needs meds, but we have had several conferences regarding a 7yr olds ability to focus in a classroom setting. Bring him home and he completes tasks on his own, from start to finish. Tell him to sit still and you might as well try and rope a tornado.

My wife wants to homeschool our boys, and I want her to as well. So now it’s just figuring out how to afford her quitting her job to handle that.

My wife and I are both public school graduates, and we both would never send our kids to the local public schools. Minnesota has failed. Public schools have declining enrollment at a significant rate, the last several years around here, for a plethora of reasons.

If their kids are chitting in a litter box I question where they learned it......🤔
I agree that character building starts at home. But I won’t send my kids to the public schools that not only tolerate, but accommodate mental illness behaviors such as litter boxes in the schools, and tampons in the boys restrooms. Public schools today, are not at all what they were yesteryear.

I've been on here a little while but I figured I should introduce myself. I'm 16 and homeschooled in Illinois. 5' 11" and 190lbs of muscle. I like cutting big logs but don't get to do it as much as I wish. 2 years ago this spring our largest machine shed with a shop attached burnt, 3am on a Sunday morning it sounded like someone was taking out windows with a shotgun. With tanks inside blowing up there was nothing we could do, it was a total loss. Got just enough insurance from everything to rebuild the barn 40'x60' with a 17'x60' lean-to shop with concrete floors. We put the entire thing up ourselves. Between cleaning up the old barn and getting the new one up it was a entire year of not seeing friends or really leaving the farm except for church. And then we bought a tractor to replace the one we lost in the fire. Well dad got home and I pull the oil dipstick and it's steaming, that was 2 months of work in the shop between other stuff. Get that done and 3 weeks later it quits moving, back in the shop for the torque limiter. Get that done and the pilot was long due for a lot of work, that was a nightmare. Just recently got that done and my v8 4runner in the shop and the frame pulled for repair. I have friends, kind of, there's one girl I've known for forever and she's just a couple minutes down the road. They stay crazy busy with 4H, homeschool co-op, and about 100 other things. Any male friends my age have always been at least a hour away. Haven't properly hung out with friends since last fall. Any of you with kids make sure they see friends somewhat regularly. I've got a somewhat part time under the radar job because Illinois says I'm just a incompetent teenager and it would be unsafe to pay me to use a drill. Well that's about it. Hopefully things will be better once I have my drivers license.
Welcome. Pay attention, don’t speak (type) too soon, and don’t assume. You’ll get along just fine.

It sounds like you have a good work ethic and curiosity for things mechanical. This is a good place to learn some stuff.

Yeah I guess you should know all about Tampon Tim.
Great posts. Thanks.

In school I went from the smart kid programs to the problem kids program once school got to where you had to be able to memorize algebra and geometry formulas. Once I couldn’t figure it out on my own they put me in a different home room where pretty much the teacher did your work so you’d make the school look like they are doing their job. I can do complex math in my head but couldn’t show it on paper, automatic fail. I was top of my class in votech for auto collision and machinist toolmaker classes, I get stupid high scores on wonderlic tests for pre employment test but school is like work. Doesn’t matter how good you do if you aren’t doing it “the” way you are wrong. I had an interview at a plumbing contractor. Aced the tests, the credit checks, the interviews. Came out to some of the suits *b-wording about the car I drove. I’d drive 200 miles a days so I’d buy a wreck for scrap price, fix it and run it into the ground. Never went for my start date. I ran a municipal authority through a contract operator because no one could follow my “squirrel brain”. It ran great even though running plants through frac tanks and throwing apocalyptic rains in the mix. My life is an organizational nightmare but it works. Public schooling would rather push the demon child through than work with someone who has a different learning style.

Lol, that isn't just regulated to teenagers. In my early 20s I was in school full time and worked part time as a pipefitters tradesman. The only tools I was allowed to operate unsupervised was a shovel and the pipe threader. One day the journeyman had two important things to get done and could not do them both and get them done that day, so he sat me down and showed me how to sweat a bunch of copper fittings for an HVAC system and then let me have at it. He told me that if I saw anyone from the union, just turn off the torch, set it down and walk away...lol. It was a good day not digging in the California sun!

Welcome. Don't fret over the home-school status. I'm a graduate of the government school system. I know many just like yourself who are doing well in life with your same background. You'll be fine. Your desire, work ethic and motivation will aid you. Enjoy learning about saws here and keep your head up. Thanks for posting.

It's not being homeschooled that's really a problem. I haven't seen friends in 8 weeks and it's been over 6 months since we really got to hang out together. Oh well, hopefully that'll change soon.

Not trying to be mean, as i have been there myself being homeschooled from 4th- thru highschool.... but, welcome to adulthood. Time to get together with friends only happens when you make a serious effort to do so, and it only gets worse as you get older....

What am I supposed to do? I don't have my drivers license yet and any friends I do have stay crazy busy. Except for one girl just down the road they're all a hour in the wrong direction now. She stays busy with school and 4H and a bunch of other stuff that other friends of hers also do. I feel stuck! I'm just sick and tired of always being the one to miss out and stay home and work all day. The list of stuff on the farm that needs fixing never seems to end and I've bought way to many tools fixing my parents stuff because we lost everything tool related when the old barn burnt and every dollar of insurance went to the new barn.

Thanks but I've replaced almost everything at this point. Just trying to fix MY car on a shoe string budget now. Bought a sheet of steel to fab my own frame pieces instead of buying already made crossmember and body mounts and what I saved came out to $54/hour.
