Husqvarna Cylinder bolt Grade?

Anyone know if the cylinder bolts on 2-series huskys are another grade other than 12.9? It looks like most OEM bolts on these saws are 12.9. Wondering if the cylinder bolts are different?

Well, most 2 series saws cylinder bolts are 1/4-20 threads. So.... grade 8, black oxide.

Their not that high of a grade.
This chart should say approximate, not equals but you get the idea.

The first time I work on a 288. I don't even have the bit to remove cylinder bolts.. it's neither Hex 4 or 5. It's 3/16.

12.9 bolts are quite high strength, it's not unusual to find grade 8.8 fasteners on vehicles subframes and engine mounts, shock absorbers and other areas of moderate stress, grade 12.9 are reserved for high stress applications, differential bearings caps, crown wheel bolts, drive shafts/CV flanges etc.

Even wheel studs are usually only graded as high as 10.9.

Grade 8.8 bolts will easily strip out any magnesium thread and be nowhere near any fatigue life, no desperate need to be any stronger.

That said, I would not use less than grade 8.8, while standard saws come with 10.9 & 12.9 they are probably a little overkill.

Yup. Was pretty odd to me. The 262XP is still metric M5, but the 266/268/272 is certainly SAE size-only for the base.

Yup. Was pretty odd to me. The 262XP is still metric M5, but the 266/268/272 is certainly SAE size-only for the base.

The 262 XP is a more modern chassis than the 61/266/68/272 chassis which started life as the 162 SE in 1978 IIRC.

They probably wanted a coarser thread for better holding power in magnesium.

Thanks for the replies. I may stick with the 12.9 grade bolt since they are made in China , just to be safe. Plus it will be the new mod everyone wants. Yep, she is all OEM. Oh, except I upgraded to high tension bolts. Makes a huge difference when you are looking for them on the ground after they have rattled loose.

Maybe thats why your bolts come loose, a 12.9 grade bolt need atleast three ugga duggas compared to one for a 8.8.
That must be why your metric screws rattle loose...

If your compressor is running 150 psi line pressure then hold the gun wide open for a full 30 seconds when installing lug nuts. That makes for an enjoyable experience for changing a flat out on the highway.
