I know that on the 350's the case bolts loosen and cause air leaks.
Those would have to loosen a long way for that to fall out I would think.
One wouldn't think it would run long enough to cause all that damage.... But there it is!

There was a small pile of mangled metal in the bottom. It must have been the plate chewed in two pieces

Yep, that’s how they go. Excessive heat and bad oil is my guess, but who knows. I had one come in with what I thought was welding splatter on the piston and spark plug (scored intake side)... nope, it ate that shim/shield/cap just like yours.

It definitely is not a well cared for saw. I think the cylinder could possibly be saved as it is butter smooth on top and a rough edge on the bottom of the intake side and could be cleaned up.
