I’m cutting my teeth on this to learn on. So far I’ve torn it down, and will be cleaning it up while I wait for my cylinder to be cut and shipped back. I’m going through and replacing the crank bearings, seals, and anything else that should be replaced on an 18 year old saw. As of now this saw has only had a base gasket delete. It is currently at 109, 127.5 and 69 with .033” squish. Going to have .012” removed form the base, not going to mess with the squish band at this point. I hope you all enjoy the build.

Found the pulse grommet deteriorated but not cracked. That will be replaced. The intake coupler is still very pliable but will also be getting replaced. Still in aw as to how clean this saw is and how well everything has cleaned up so far.

Found the wrist pin very discolored but no visible or nail catching scoring. Will be replacing the wrist pin and bearing along with a new piston ring upon reassembly. I will also be replacing the tank mount rubbers, they are still very pliable but are misshapen.

I do have a question about the oil pick up. It appears to be a stationary pick up that would make oil pick up starved with the tank below 1/2. And oiling nonexistent under 3/4 tank if cutting with the clutch cover facing up. (Not that that happens a lot but still) is there an update oil pick up for this to make oiling more consistent??? Crank bearings seem fine but will be replaced. I really like this saw and have owned it for the past 8 years of its 18.

That tube is not your oil pickup, it's the tank vent.

If you're going to have the base cut, why not go ahead and have the band cut too? All said and done, the nice thing about having the base and squish cut, you get a solid boost in compression, more intake without any grinding, and you will still be able to use a base gasket, which is preferable to deleting it IMHO. I'm sure any of these machinists hanging around in here will cut both with minimal cost over just skimming .012" off the base. You're already sending it for machine work, why not give it the full treatment. You won't regret it.

I see what you were talking about with the oil pickup now. I just rebuilt a 55 in December..I don't even remember that pickup! Lol!
Yeah, looking at it it wouldn’t take much at all to starve the bar with 1/2 of oil in it. Gotta try to figure a way to remedy that..... it doesn’t help that my dumb-donkey took the picture with the case upside down..... at least I have to concentrate on what I’m looking at in the picture anyway. The veterans on here Probly not so much.....

That’s what we were planning but I learned from someone much smarter than me that you can’t go very deep on the base before getting into the pulse port passage. So, he’s going to play it safe and just cut the base to tighten the squish. Another thing to keep in mind on this one Joe is that the wrist pin is only 10mm in diameter. That’s 2mm smaller than the 254’s wrist pin.

Sir

Can you measure the height of the top of the pin bore to crown for me?

Also pin diameter?

Thanks for the help.
Pin diameter is 10mm, I can get the measurement for you this afternoon when I get home from work. What ya working on Doc? Searching for another hybrid piston?:)
