Husqvarna 288 popping at WOT

Recently i got a Husky 288xp from my uncle. when in the cut with a 32" bar it pulls fine and cuts like crazy but i get a loud popping noise at WOT in the cut. was wondering if its 4 stroking, or if i'm having another issue i should be concerned about? if i need to get a video i will

Was the timing ever advanced? And how much if so? I assume you know how to tune a saw looking at all the nice saws you have in your signature.

i do not know if its been advanced. i got it from my uncle who was a logger, who got it from my granddad who was a logger, who bought it off a logger he meet while steal head fishing in eastern Oregon. lol i have yet to tear into it all I've done is tune it is vac test, compression test and tune it. i'll have to get a video and upload

sounds like i'll be tearing into this one here very soon. i always forget about the possobility of sheared keys. it wouldn't surprise me on this saw either, it has about 180 psi compression

Don't forget some of these carbs have the governor built into them, easy to defeat but the do sound different when hitting the governor

interesting, i did not know that, how does one know if the carb has the governor in it? and how does one defeat it?

Look for a brass plug on the PTO side of the carb installed, if it has a brass plug w a flat slot, it has a governor, cut a piece of an alluminum can, install it then the plug again.

There’s another carb other than the common “governed”’one that has an auxiliary jet inside carb in the metering well. Same basic principle, but it’s internal rather than external. I couldn’t get mine to keep from 4 stroking on and off in the wood. I soldered the main jet closed with intentions of drilling it smaller. Tried it without drilling the jet and it tuned at around 1 turn out so I left it. Probably not pertinent here, but just mentioning it for future readers

What’s a blue trigger unit?

the little blue thingy mounted on right side under top cover. i chased my tail on my 281 for a while with a misfire at full throttle, turned out to be that blue module.

I suspect it is the hv coil up. By the carb also check the connector is tight

Lots of good advice in here. Put me in the ignition club, partially sheared key or poor connection on the blue trigger coil. I’ve experienced both and it popped like crazy. Didn’t resemble 4 stroking at all

Ignitions are pretty tough on these saws, doesn't mean they can't go out. A bad ground with the coil in the carb box could be all this is. Can be found out with an ohm meter or just clean and tighten the grounding screw and run it.

A bad spark plug lead, loose spark plug connector or loose end on the spark plug may also cause the noise you’re hearing. Easy enough to check.
