Are they not necessary because they create more/too much compression and increase wear on the saw or just unnecessary?
The pop-up pistons on eBay are mostly LRB or Farmertec and my experience with those is they're not a tight enough fit to the cylinder, so you lose the gain of any "pop-up" compression to the looser piston/cylinder wall clearance.
