This subject just reminded me of something I sort of dropped the ball on. I'll be a tease and say I may have a connection for the vallorbe double bevels but haven't followed up on it at all and it's a bit sketchy, so...

Picked up a 288 earlier in the year off a logger guy out in nowhere south western Cow-hampshire, was a nice fellow and of course I hung around shooting the chit for a while. I noticed the chain on the 288 had some unique looking sharpening going on that, while not really square, couldn't have been done with a round file.

Turns out he was indeed using double bevels but had no real idea how to use them, though was actually quite happy with the way his chains cut as opposed to round filing and had been doing it that way for years. I offered to show him an 'alternative' method and he pulled out a file, a vallorbe double bevel file.
I inquired where he came across such a thing and it turns out his wife worked at some sort of heavy equipment dealer and they would special order them for her, probably once a year or so. I offered to buy any he would let go of but he declined, not being sure how much they even cost or if he could get more when the time came around again.
He then very generously handed me a few and refused payment.

The source was somewhat out of the way of my usual travels and he didn't have a specific contact to give me and furthermore sort of indicated it likely that if I called no one that would normally answer would have a clue to what or who I was after. Basically just have to stop in and bother anyone I could find about it.
I figured next time I was out that way I'd find the place but wasn't going to make a dedicated trip on the outside chance of success. And then they may be stupid $'s...
Just didn't get out there, forgot all about it and now I'm not even positive I can find it, lol. Does make me think that some big distributor on this side of the pond must stock them at least.
I guess I'll make some calls, can't hurt to try.

Sort of missed the 'bevel' part of it, lol.

So Save Edge is out, Bahco is :nusenuse:, and STIHL/Vallorbe is reserved for dot com millionaires...

Where does that leave PFERD in the double bevel hierarchy of quality?

I like their round files

I’ve not called them for anything in a couple years either. I ordered something from them that Madsens didn’t have.

I know before the buy out stuff has changed over the last few years less inventory as well as people changes. I remember going in as a kid they’d have pallets of new saws so the buys were pretty good then same with chain. Any more it’s either hydraulic stuff I need or harvester bar and chain which I’d bet is most of their business for the saw shop now besides grinding chains.
