Same here. Actually I never ran the HD2, still the old non intelli carb 1980's 064 HD setup on my 1997 066.
Flocked filters were notorious for disinigrating not from the gas but from a over zealious high pressure air gun.
All filters get spitback fuel mix on them and that doesn't degrade them.
Here's my non intelli 066.
Got my 066/064 RL hybrid setup non intelli too.

You actually cut wood with a saw? Now you'll need to remove the clutch and clean everything, remove the recoil and flywheel, replace the seals, rebuild the carb, replace the air filter, and do another muffler mod, before putting it back together and polishing the whole thing. You better go get a NOS replacement for that saw, to keep the shelf occupied while it's down for normal servicing.

It does when you spend an hour dicking around with the air filter, and then dicking around with your phone for another hour to tell the world about it, after every three minutes of runtime. But hey, at least he doesn't have to deal with an extra part glued to the air filter, right? That might trigger him to seek out a safe place!
