Dirt is the worst enemy of those carb shafts, I have fixed many sets of evenrude 55 commercial wallered carb shafts by reaming out carb body an install is plastic bushings and then reinstalling carb shafts. All the blown sand on the rivers in central Alaska is hard on equipment. Wear in the carb shafts will cause lean / air leak conditions.

I Called the Tilly America number
Spoke to a nice guy at VE Peterson’s
They had everything in stock for a HS 163A on the 266SE.

Bushings, 49 cent each
Return Spring, 89 cents
New Shaft, $5.50

I didn’t ask what shipping was. I’m hoping it’s less than $5
This is great info - thanks. I have sent an email to them and will see what they have to say about repairing my HS228.

We bushed throttle shafts on Q jets back many years ago.
Used a long step drill then a long reamer thru the bushings.
It would be a small thin bushing in a saw carb.
If you can't get a new shaft maybe build up the shaft with solder then polish for size.

I did find the Tillotson manual which does show the bushings and shafts .It's kind of hard to follow but does show some models listing venturi size . A majority of the mid size saws use a 17.5 mm .or 11/16" .The HS model shows up to nearly 1" .I've got another parts listing some place showing older models as related to older saws like the 2100s in my avatar and if I'm correct it's an HL with a 15/16" size
Some of the 17.5 MM on HS models used larger throttle butter flies than others .As such logic would say should deliver more fuel .

The biggest HS series Tillotson came on the Dolmar 9010 and had an 18.3mm venturi.

How’d you make out with getting an email reply?

I found they have great IPL catalogue on their site. It looks like the bushings and lots others are universal to the 228 and 224 and 163

Is the hole too big for the shaft or is the shaft too small for the hole? :nusenuse:
Well I can't honestly say one way or the other, since the shaft is still inside the hole. When I whip it out, I will check for length and girth and note any changes. Could be some shrinkage going on here that I'm not owning up too...

I sent an email to Tillotson.ie and got a quick reply back directing me to VE Petersen in the States. I sent them an email yesterday but haven't heard back from them yet. In the mean time I posted a want ad in the classifieds looking for a good HS228 carb.

I thought my issue was at a bushing. Looks more likely the shaft.
Got the VE Peterson parts today

And I think with the shaft wear, the throttle shutter took some uneven wear. And it doesn’t want to sit back down at idle. I have to just about bottom the idle screw to contact the paddle. And it runs pretty good on start.

I called VE again and ordered a shutter and full rebuild kit.

I can say that when you talk to Jeff, everything is obsolete. Talk to Al and it’s found in a minute.

It’s less than $65 or a genuine carb and 13 for a China carb, these aren’t too expensive, like some models can be

Agreed. I thinks that’s almost exactly what I paid for this KO. 13.

The fast idle didn’t follow the chinese, and it throttles up pretty well.

I still want to build back the Tilly and will stop if $$ gets dumb. Except for the rebuild kit, I’ll have about $15 in to it.

Well this is embarrassing...

I pulled the shaft out of the hole and ack! It has shrunk - a lot!

But the good news is, she still has a nice tight hole and all I need to do is get that shaft back to full size and she will be purring like a kitten - or growling like a tiger.. yeah!!

Nice find.
If you order I suggest you order a new throttle shudder too. And for two more bux a new spring and spring bushings ( the bushings I got are plastic)

So on a serious note, the shaft eroded over time?

Yes it is very worn - very much like the pics in M2theB's post. It seems the engineers at Tillotson anticipated this issue and made shafts from a softer material than the carb body - which is a good thing.
