Today calibers less than .375 Mag usually are outlawed for "dangerous game" in Africa, except that 9.3x62 and 9.3x64 are allowed anyway.

Regular SMLE WW1 infantry rifles - there were a few surplus ones after WW1....

Slightly larger than 7x57, and you are of course right - the .303 British is the other candidate.

My bet on the 7x57 though, but I don't think we ever will know for sure. The 7x57 obviously had a major "head start".

Well you can see that I changed my answer while you were posting. I should have stayed with my initial gut feeling.

Of course it was brain shots from right in front of the elephants that was the only option with those calibers, there wasn't much room for mistakes....

Bell used two rifles, the .275 Rigby (7x57), and the Mannlicher (I forget the cartridge). He did claim he'd made most of his shots using the 7mm and his bore "had never been polluted by a soft".

No wonder, soft points are of course useless for elephant.
