Once in awhile we have a situation crop up where a guy buys a saw/parts/etc and never receives what he paid for. It's rare here, but it does happen.

How to avoid becoming prey to an online scammer is a matter of education. They say that the best education is the one you gotta pay for, but with a little diligence, you can afford spending big bucks.

Before you send someone online money make sure you have done these things....

1. Ask the seller for references. Who here on OPE forum can vouch for you? Have you sold to other members?

2. Ask for detailed pictures. If the seller is on the up and up....they will be willing to do something as simple as post pictures.

3. Never use PayPal F&F. If the seller demands that you use F&F, walk away.

4. Don't just give them your address. Ask for their address, and a phone number. It's not a bad idea to actually call and have a conversation.

Anyone have any thoughts, or other ideas to add to this list?

It sucks having to do things this way, but that's the world we live it. Everyone isn't trustworthy.

Like my dad once told me....

"It's ok to trust people, but go ahead and cut the cards anyhow"

I like to ask buyers who their preferred shipper is as they have a better idea of which one is best on their end. I once shipped a saw that was only half paid for to a friend, when I sent him the shipping info he was like "you used them", then he sends me a google review of that company for his area, it showed a 1.5 out of five stars . They ended up dropping the saw off a few miles from his place at 10:13 pm o_O, fortunately the guy who got it brought it over a couple days later, but not without much concern/fretting on mine and the buyers behalf .
Lots of communication that is clear goes a long way, it's hard to have a face to face conversation with someone and not have a misunderstanding, how much more when dealing with someone over the net/phone.

I think that should be a header in every for classifieds thread because some people will go straight to a for sale page without first visiting the list of classifieds threads.

Like this thread status header, but make it red and stuff

Is there anyway to mention feedback score for being a seller on the persons profile page? Tapatalk is limited on what it shows on individuals.

I normally do a credit check with someone on here before sending funds.

We have a feedback system....as for seeing it using Tapatalk, I have no idea. Never used that.

Just a side note about ppl f&f...
There's another reason for some sellers wanting to use it that isn't about scamming buyers or the 3%.
Ppl doesn't report f&f transactions as income to the irs like it does on other transactions after you get to a certain $ amount...

If I know a seller well enough or they at least have a good longstanding rep here, I generally use f&f as the default.
Guess I've been lucky so far...

I wouldn’t say lucky, I think more that you knew who you were dealing with. The last 10% was luck.

Paypal reports it as income and issues a 1099 IF you hit $20k AND 200 separate payments in a calendar year.

I'll add a 2nd side note.

Twice I have been burned by pp and their 180 day policy. Received a deposit on one item and a full payment on another. Both buyers when they got close to the 180 day limit claimed they never received the item. Even though I had a signed invoice for goods sold. I didn't get the funds back $700 between the two transactions. $750-8 if you figure in the overdrafts & bs bank fees. So ever since then I have been f&f, certified check or cash in person. I also don't sell as much now. Too many headaches, it's a hobby it should be fun. Chit like this sucks the fun out of it but I get it.

Of course it's not fair....but.

The longer you've been with PayPal without any disputes, the more apt they are to side with you. I've had two cases opened against me over the years. Both were people who were experiencing buyers remorse and decided to ask PayPal for their money back rather than just ask me. This was before they recieved the saw of course, so I just refunded them without any fuss. Both times PayPal contacted me to tell me that I could have fought the dispute and probably won because of the sales record I have. Literally thousands of sales without issue. I don't do drama well though. I'd rather just refund and move on.

Bingo boss agree 100%. All comes down to the person on each end. I got shafted because I don't use pp very much and didn't know all their protocols and produces.

But it all comes down to this

Problem is the small percentage without ruins it for the masses.

Asking for a friend that never used PayPal. Is PayPal save and good for the buyer if a seller is a scam?

I can relate to these comments!

Whatever dealings I have had with members on here is a drop in the sea compared to the value of dealings others have.
Still, not being of wealth and living off a fairly low monthly income every $ counts at the end of the month/year.

I am both, a buyer and a seller and funds tend to go through PayPal.
That been said as a seller I prefer F&F, not only to undermine any shady refund claims, but also because the funds are available immediately as opposed to being held back awaiting clearance up to 14 days. Going with F&F allows me to pay the buyers desired items with the buyers funds.
On the other hand as a buyer I feel safer going G&S.
So far I have been spared from any scams, thankfully, though just one bad apple will be enough for me to stop doing any future dealings, rather call it quits and have my piece of mind.

To clarify, having dealings with members on here I do not make any profit significant enough to notice in my wallet at the end of the month - I could just as well not have any dealings, save time, not miss any $ and simply worry less.
The most value I received through dealing with forum members is making great contacts, some of which I am proud to call my friends.
For my "friends" I will jump through burning hoops trying to help them out with whatever they need assistance with!

Making new trustworthy contacts, and hopefully future friends, is a game of trust that needs to be played fairly by all parties involved.

I once went to my local hardware store to purchase a lock.
The employee handed me a cheap generic China made lock priced at under 5$ (technically, any key that fits into the key hole will be able to unlock those locks).
I asked for a higher quality lock with locking jaws on both sides.
The employee responded "We only stock these. Locks are for honest people, they won't stop a thief from opening it!".

In the end, as both a buyer and seller I understand the weary feeling dealing with someone "new"!
But at some point we all were new to the game and it took honesty and trust on both sides to learn play it right.

To all that I had and have dealings with - THANK YOU for Your trust in me.
If You ever feel there is an issue with a deal You have with me, PLEASE let us resolve it in a mutually acceptable manner.

To all those preying on the good will of honest people - go have intercourse with a hornets nest and report back how You liked it.

Sorry for the lengthy post, thank You for reading.
Cheers
