I enjoyed running that thing -- that saw was like the working girl that every guy at the GTG worked ;)
I ran the unicorn at the last GTG and still liked the way that 064 ran better. Your buddy must be psyched to have it.
Al's saw is way ahead but that old saw ran good.
That was the last one I built with a 288 piston I think.

What was it that you liked better?
Als saw is very unforgiving but to get it that strong they loose some drivability.

I ported a 460 for a guy that had done some grinding on it and it ran good but the exhaust was free ported without machine work so the only way I could fix the free port and cut the chamber to get some compression was a 064 piston
I should have cut some crown off but instead I cut it all from the chamber.
I knew I'd have to open the chamber to loose compression but I didn't think it would be this high, yes I did run it like this for scientific purposes.

Much more and you'll be beyond the range of the gauge ;)
Looks beasty.

You know what -- by the time the unicorn was in my hands I think the chain had been raped pretty bad... I remember I had to dog it a lot to get it to cut, and the saw was pretty damn hard to stop -- could apply all the pressure you want.

The 064 just seemed smooth and just had grunt -- like the unicorn it seemed you could put as much pressure on it you want. It could be just chain condition. The video above of me running it is one of my favorite runs to date.
I think the only way I could make a fair comparison would be to run each w/ same bar and chain and wood.... but we can't do that at this point.

I do have the dyno chart for the 064 -- it was the only one that really hit that 9 HP arena and had that nice long powerband.
If the Unicorn makes an appearance at the May GTG and we have a functioning dyno we can try and get a run for comparison.

Al's is a very long way ahead of that old saw of mine.
I got a cylinder on that saw now that's not near what Al's is and it's still good way ahead of the one you ran.

Chain is as important as the saw, very fast saw with a bad chain can easily be beat by a much slower saw with a good chain.

I would like to see Al'shybrid on the dyno.
The only saw I can make stronger is a 661.

That was mine. And I had a few more problems but it ran surprisingly good and Jason fixed me up. He ran it with the 044 hybrid a few weeks ago the way I had it. It's on it's way back home [emoji106]

Do you think any was added using a 064 over the 460 if you could have used it? Their was some positives about using the 064

The 460 was probably 275lb and started no different than at 200lb.
It's all technique
