You were shooting a 350 grain slug at 2300 fps out of a Trapdoor? That's very close to .458 Winchester power level, you used up more than a lifetime supply of divine protection!
Not a trapdoor, the H&R break action I posted pics of yesterday.

What are some of your more powerful models? For a long time my 270 was the highest power firearm that I owned. Then I bought a Henry 45-70 and got the high power bug. Still have the Henry but have since added a Browning 1885 High Wall 45-70 and a Ruger M77 Hawkeye African 35 Whelen.

The Henry with the aforementioned 270, a Remington Model 710.

The Browning with an Uberti 1873 357 Magnum and an Uberti 1860 44-40.

The Ruger, have not fired it yet, planning to do so Saturday after work.

I was in deep thought about a 35 Whelen 2 years ago but my son talked me out of getting one.

About Thanksgiving last year he called & asked me what I thought of 35 Whelen …

He didn’t even remember us talking them over the year before.

He bought a custom made at a local to him gun shop, heavy barrel, Mauser action. He loves it.

He was using a 350 Legend but has since parked it in favor of the 35.

He said the deer drop on the spot instead of meandering off a ways.

Maybe I will acquire one at some point.

I always thought the Whelen was a neat cartridge, and a good all around choice for North America. 'Specially up north, where the hunter could become the hunted. Do you know what load he uses?

If I am remembering correctly that gun liked 200 grain Federals, I do know that it didn’t like Hornady.

He is talking about scrubbing it down & trying some Barnes coppers, I told him for the goats around here a 180 grain might be a good choice but he really likes the 200grain.

One thing I notice about the Legend is that the bullets are rather light for the caliber due to the AR magazine length. Give it a proper bullet of more than 200 grains and I imagine it would be a decent close range big game round. I hope the .360 Buckhammer develops a following, it looks like a really good cartridge. It should also work well with cast slugs.

If ya don't know.... now ya know!

The now even more rare because of his sad passing.... the fireball breathing hand cannon Coonan 357 mag. Dan was an innovative gun smith. Interesting how the magazine was able to feed cowboy rounds into a auto pistol. Proving exactly how much a magazine plays a role in how well a firearm performs. Glock did as well, being how much high end double stack (cough 2011's) use those mags to feed their designs.

Ruger bolt action 6.5 Creedmoor precision

And the Sig Sauer 1911 Nightmare chambered in 357 sig. (Also kinda rare)

I have a 300 Win Mag and a 270 but my 450 BM Ruger American and 454 Casull Browning 1885 kills them the deadest.

I have my Pap's 1950's Savage 300 win mag. I do believe he had the barrel glass beaded before passing. Accuracy with the 300 win mag (in my smooth brained opinion) is such a better controllable cartridge over the 3 oh hate. But with the availability of a 308 being better it's a more logical cartridge.

Father used a 351 Win self-loader with 180gr loads for many years which accounted for many a deer over MN, Wi and Mi tight close shooting northwoods which is one of the things that attracted me to the Legend, Older brother inherited Dads 351 which ammo is hard to find now days. Brother took his largest Wi whitetail with a 350 Legend which I built for him dropped in woods road it was crossing when shot using 170gr load.

I have taken multiple bucks as well as does in both Mn and Wi with my own Legend with 170gr loads all well under 100yds.

My only guess is that the deer do not know that 170gr is to light for caliber.;):D not something I would be tempted to try on moose.

the Buckhammer does look interesting just because who doesn't like trying something new oh yeah and a 6.5

Anybody do MLers?

I use a 58 hawken style in .58 that launches 525gr hornady plains bullets over 100g FFg. That kicks about like a 12ga slug.
NEF Handi Rifle with 44/45cal saboted bullets.

Lyman? great plains Hawken style 58cal round ball only.

.36cal percussion something or other for squirrel.

The Buckhammer has me intrigued because it was designed to be chambered in a lever gun. In the age of AR platforms being a dime a dozen I just think it's pretty cool to see some real R&D going into a new cartridge for an "archaic" design.

Kudos to Henry Rifles for keeping the fire going during the darkest hour (both Remington and Savage quit making lever guns, Marlin went out of business, and Winchester all but ceased production for a while).

Winchester is back in the game and Ruger is slowly but surely breathing new life into Marlin. The new production 1894s are among the best ever made and the new 336 Classic is simply a work of art (although I am eagerly awaiting the return of the 1895 CB). And Savage is stepping back in as well with a new .22 offering (would love to se the 99 make a return but not sure it ever will).
