There it's the base layer in the handle that has the heating elements attached to it. I'll do a search for heat shrink and see if there is some around .070. I checked with Makita and they dont sell just the covering. You have to buy the whole handle and that's $89. Maybe a thin layer over the ribbed like someone already suggested?
it's the same problem we face fixing Huskys heathed handles.
You got several options, Dan. If it was me I would just fix it so it will continue to work.

I figured Tor! I'll clean it up and find a piece of heat shrink tubing and put it on. Should be fine!

I am facing a similar problem on my 7910H, luckily the handle is till available new, was fairly reasonable in price, mine just is worn and still works but I wanted to make it like new.

Finally got around to installing the shrink tubing on my Makita 5001 heated handle. I bought 39mm 3 to 1 tubing from Amazon. It was a *b-word to get on but the results are worth the effort. Ill see how well the heat transmits through the extra layer.
