Red oaks around here tend to grow fast especially free standing: 36" DBH after 40-80 years, but in the forest in virginia, their red oaks seem to only reach around 16" after 80 years. I wonder if that would make heavier wood?

Definitely makes a difference. Spruce in Alaska has tight growth rings and is heavier than ours. It’s more like our hardwoods

Betting the spring cut pin oak here over three feet wide is near 90ld sq ft fresh cut. All heart wood might be more. Old honey locust is near 90ish.
The over-cup, post and chestnut seem about right.

This one had varying tightness of the rings. Quite a few were very tight, then they’d widen out. Uncle Rob, as he’s know to the PA Posse, sealed both sides of the witness ring I cut from the log. I’m eager to see how it turns out. They said they counted 199 rings at the spot they cut but when I got down the base a little further, I came up with a quick count of 180 couple.
