Buddy of mine just gave me a 288. Couldn't tell ya if it's an XP or not. Serial plate says just 288, and the label is about half gon off the starter cover.

The downside? He picked it off the side of the road last year. It broke the pistol grip about midway on the top.

He says they had it running, but couldn't get the chain to move. I showed him the chain brake....Solved. But he didn't need or want, so he handed it to me today.

It's pretty well used looking, never gonna be pretty again, and a previous owner brazed a chunk of pipe in the muffler, presumably a larger port than stock.

Anyone got a tank/grip assy in their wrecking pile? Found the shop manual posted by Mastermind, thanks a bunch!

I suppose I could get creative with a couple tubes of JB Weld and some glass cloth, but that would be ugly...

What's the skinny on the 288 anyways? Good? Bad? Just the wrong color? Feel free. :) Gonna be pretty hard to make me feel bad about a free saw!

Thanks!

Alright. Hit the 5 files limit, will try a couple of the broken handle.

So, as can be seen, the bottom handle is bent a bit. Other pictures of 288's have shown only one bolt through there, so I am guessing that it is simply tweaked, not having sheared off a bolt.

I have the Operator presence lever, and springs, as well as the trigger, lost the side panels off the handle, and broke at the back end.

The knob is missing off the choke too, busted off flush with the cover. Thinking I can sub in a screw head in place of, at least for now.

There is a wallowed out screw hole beside the cylinder on the PTO side of the cover. Looks like a candidate for a tapped out hole, and a piece of a bolt to be inserted into it, drilled and tapped back to match the screw. Other than that, there is some damage to the edges of the case from the cover beating as it vibrated. No big deal.

Didn't measure the bar, but it says 93DL on it, so am guessing at a 28 inch. Chain is actually in pretty decent shape, maybe been hit with a file once or twice, but mostly there. Bar could use dressing. And maybe crank up the oil a bit.

Ran it! Wahoo! Was bone dry, pulled it over a couple times and got tired of that so dribbled a splash of fuel down the carb and it ran on the second pull.
Compression feels great, should dig out my gauge and see if it will fit the hole...

I have seen worse looking brazing jobs than that one, it ain't pretty but it hasn't fallen off, so it's good for now.

And that's what I got!

My very first Husqvarna saw!

That handle is worth saving...wraps for the 288 are harder to find than frog hair! AND you have a hightop...another sought after part that is NLA from momma husky. You suck more now!!!

Your saw is a 1992 model year. Your first Husqvarna is one of, if not the best they ever made. I have a new choke pull for ya

Thanks again!
Yeah that wrap handle is in OK shape, once I figured out that it wasn't missing a screw along the way. Going to take longer to pull it off than to tweak it back into line with the press.
It saw some use, for sure, but isn't really in too bad shape. Needs a good clean, though. Dunno if the guy was cutting dry fir or pine with it but between the resin and dust, the whole rig has a pretty good coat that can't be helping the cooling much.

Am I right guessing that the high top cover allows a larger air filter? Velocity stack? Blower? (c'mon, y'all KNOW that if someone made a blower small enough...:) )

I will freely admit to being quite ignorant about most of the ins and outs of Husky saws, but a fella can fix that with a little reading eh? :)

Am pretty chuffed.

Yep hightop is just the top that allows use of a bigger more effective air filter. V-stack won’t fit without cutting the top, of you want a stack get an old low top to sacrifice and put that hightop safe on a shelf.

A 288 doesn’t need a blower, a blower needs a 288. :)

Lemme see if I have this right: Your first Husky is a running 288 with a full wrap and a hi-top....for free? Awesome sir!...and yes, you suck...about as much as you can possibly suck

If you do nothing else to that saw, replace the tank/handle. It's too far gone to try any kind of repair (that likely won't work anyway) and that saw deserves better.

And, yes, YOU SUCK! ;)

Yeah. Have an offer of a available tank in the works, sounds like.

On that 'blower' comment, it WAS actually meant tongue in cheek, but... gods help us all, there actually is a roots blower small enough! I was surfin the weeb last night, and decided to look. Sho' nuff, a bunch of tidler size options, the likely best one is a Porsche Smog Pump that has been adapted to use on bike engines as small as 50cc. Hoodathunkit? That isn't even going into all the vane type pumps that have been used.

Gonna be away for a day or two. Off to go ice fishing at a friend's place in the sticks.
Not ignoring anyone.

And thanks for the heartfelt 'you suck's" :) Kinda cool to get a heck of a gift!

I was following with your blower suggestion, just took advantage to debut my Chuck Norris 288 joke...lol!

I’ll get pics of that tank to you in about 30 minutes.

Here’s my 288 for motivation, not ported, just base gasket delete and muffler mod. Cutting 22” frozen sugar maple...powa
