Buddy of mine just gave me a 288. Couldn't tell ya if it's an XP or not. Serial plate says just 288, and the label is about half gon off the starter cover.

The downside? He picked it off the side of the road last year. It broke the pistol grip about midway on the top.

He says they had it running, but couldn't get the chain to move. I showed him the chain brake....Solved. But he didn't need or want, so he handed it to me today.

It's pretty well used looking, never gonna be pretty again, and a previous owner brazed a chunk of pipe in the muffler, presumably a larger port than stock.

Anyone got a tank/grip assy in their wrecking pile? Found the shop manual posted by Mastermind, thanks a bunch!

I suppose I could get creative with a couple tubes of JB Weld and some glass cloth, but that would be ugly...

What's the skinny on the 288 anyways? Good? Bad? Just the wrong color? Feel free. :) Gonna be pretty hard to make me feel bad about a free saw!

Thanks!

288 is a great Saw! Most OEM parts are still available and there are lots in the aftermarket too. 288’s are actually still made in Brazil today. And yes pics please!

Good score man. 288's are one of the best saws Husqvarna made. There's a huge following for them on this site and everywhere else. Most parts are still readily available. Fix it, run it, love it. Hooray 288!!!

Thanks guys.

I'll see to a couple pics tomorrow.

Had a quick eyeball of the breakages and a fella that was half handy should be able to doctor up something. Figuring along the lines of a stainless or aluminum plate wrapped up and around the back end, goobered on with some pop rivets and glue, if the structure will allow, and a couple braces in place of the inserts on either side of the grip, maybe on the same terms, some flat stock and a few rivets to lock it all down while the epoxy sets up.

Lookin' like one stripped out screw on the air filter/cylinder cover, and have not got deeper in than that.

Oh, a mild bend in the wrap handle, looks to have lost or maybe sheared of one of the screws at the bottom brace plate. Not a deal breaker!

Feels OK popping over, the guy says it ran. Probably try that tomorrow too.

I'd say it would be easier to find and change the gas tank/ rear handle then do the repair you're talkin about. Not only that, you wouldn't be able to "work" the saw with a boogered up handle. I've tried that fix and seen it. It never holds very long.

Completely agree with Dale on this @Trevj1 . I have a used tank, I think, hard to remember after all the 288 craziness in my barn lately...lol. It’s not pretty but it isn’t broken if its still there. I know I have a handle. Shoot me a PM and we’ll work something out.

Cool!

I'll touch base with you tomorrow after I get some pictures up and we can figure out what I have here for sure.

Appreciate the help!
