Unlikely these will improve power or keep filters clean but have fun , it's a feel good thing :)

I have an extra cover. Don't think I'd chop up a rare bird, but on a super common 036 cover, it's all good.

Could you use this stuff in place of filter screen when you are modifying your 026 filters?

This isn't quite a full tank, anything to help the filter from getting plugged then I'm all for it.

If it's just that area of the filter effected it isn't nearly plugged nor will it be . Those filters shake off debris .

Those filters suck, if you put the vents on then they wouldn't have as much suction in any certain area, thus not plugging the filter

Julian has been playing with them on the 661. Filters isn't keeping as much dust on them. Not as good as no cover but some don't like that set up with no filter protection. I'll add some to a few saws that don't have filters anyway.

On some of the smaller Stihl, the air boxes are pretty isolated with an opening near the handle opposite the control lever and one on top to take air in winter mode.

The 036 cover shown actually had the summer block off plate on top and the winter block off plate on the bottom.

Even with both removed, I'm not sure that the saw will get enough airflow ported.

I don't see a relatively safe and clean way to get fresh air near the filter being a bad thing.

In many cases we are dealing with saws that have been modified for increased output. If your opening the muffler to get more out, you have to open the intake to get more in.

I see these being a very good option.

They breath better than one would expect. I added some to my 360 today

I preferr no plastic on my saws, but if its raining or snowing, I'd rather have the cover installed and still be able to get fresh cold air into them

I'll be looking to get some of these
I think the frogskins are great if anyone gets a link can they post it please

I like using the HD-2 filters on my saws, which are all working saws. They still run fine even after several tanks of fuel, and most of the debris will easily tap out (against a piece of wood). For more complete cleaning, I will use the compressor now & then.

The HD-2s provide a SIGNIFICANT performance increase over the old 3 layer filter that came stock on my old 044, especially in conjunction with the dp muff covers. I have HD-2s on all my saws and have no plans to change that. And even though I did not have time to clean the filters before the event, all my saws did just fine and the GTG and dynoed well also (with dirty HD-2s).

Before going to the HD-2s I tried the K&N filters. The HD-2s seem to perform just as well, and are much easier to clean. If anyone wants to buy new or like new K&N filters for the 044/440, just let me know, I have a few (they do not seem to fit the 460, even though it said they would).

Usually, after a few tanks of fuel, the top and bottom of the HE-2 filter have chips in it, but the sides are still relatively clear and still providing plenty of fresh air.

I just use the top of my bar so all the chips go the other way ,filter stays nice and clean :nusenuse:
Outerwear's skin on the hd2 seems to work pretty good also .Seems like if you could block off the air that the fan pushes at the filter ,that would help the most plus these skins ,my recoil covers are like a vacuum cleaner and constantly covered in big chips where i have to wipe it off .

Any difference in how it runs? I like how it looks

good question. Ran a quick test yesterday.

Tree Monkeyed 661 , 28" bar, .404 RS full comp, 8pin sprocket. Wood = Maple

stock cover - 16.7 17.6 think it really shows on the 2nd cut...maybe the air heats up inside the cover? vs with the frogzskins it has fresher air? I dunno just a guess.

with frogzskins - 15.6 16.0 - so it's faster and especially on the 2nd cut.
