Are K&H and redheads the same?

Nope. Different companies.

K&H on top. Red head on bottom. Red head is made by double taper wedge company.

I bought mine from here.

They sell them as K&H Red Head wedges.

Is assume that the red top is just dye? Makes it easier to find if it goes flying? But you like them due to the plastic they use (whatever color it is)?

Thanks.

Philbert
Seems the stihl wedges have the same taper and marking just solid orange. They're more expensive so I get mine from Madsens. About time to do it again since I can't find more than about a dozen

That is labeled wrong there. They both work but the K&H work better from my use. Those slick ones pop out easier.
I am confused now. I thought I bought K&H wedges?

Wedge story .My father was born in 1920 and lived 86 years. In his day around 1937 or so they cross cut every thing .Oak logs 20 feet long and around 30 inches they wedged open those with steel wedges backed by oak and split those things small enough run through a tractor driven buzz saw with a John Deere A for power .I can't even imagine rail splitting a big oak log like that .

I made myself from Nylon 66 at work which are a darn site tougher I might add .
How do those nylon wedges hold up Al?

Do they hold as well, or tend to slip out?

I have a bunch of steel splitting wedges - pick them up when I see them at estate sales for a few dollars and recondition them. That is a separate thread.

The nylon works ok or at least as well as those plastic contraptions from Baileys .Steel can come back at you like a shot out of a cannon .Try getting beaned in the shin with one of them while banging away with an 8 pound sledge .It will just make you dance and shout .

No really it's very seldom I need to wedge one over .

Here's my bucket of wedges I use when felling. The 3 lb drilling hammer is what I beat them with. I rarely carry an axe or hatchet to a job site even though I have a half dozen of them. I do always have a machete with me though.

I have an assorted number of brands as seen above. I've never had one break/shatter that I can remember. I have "modified" a few of them with the chain. oops!
I have a few more wedges around here and there. I usually carry at least one in my saw tool box in case I forget my bucket of wedges.

I had to use the steel ones last afternoon .Flush ground cut on a 24" maple stump .I do okay about 4 inchs up but invariably screw up on flush cuts . Get the cuts off,dig the dirt and just make a mess .Stick the saw--mumble grumble. Broke that SOB loose with a couple steel and an 8 pound beater.Took me an hour and a half on that damned thing .85 degrees and 95 percent humidity .Took a couple Budweisers to replenish .
