Three D4 Cats and right now none are runnable . The one I have at the house is an OC 6 Oliver ,about the same size as a D2 Cat with more power .It's basically an Oliver super 77 on tracks ,about 9,000 pounds and 34HP gasoline engine . That one I rebuilt from the tracks up .In low gear you can't stall it .At any rate small as it is it's got enough to tip that cotton wood .
Eastern black cotton wood is of the poplar family .Not real good firewood nor it it strong like oak .However it doesn't split out like oak and when it dries is good for things like outrigger pads .Unlike oak it gets lighter as it dries and oak remains as heavy as lead. A lot of poplar trim sold is cottonwood but most people don't know it .There's a lot of board feet in that thing unless it breaks on the fall .
Cool on the dozens. And great info on your tree. Thank u

New joint effort and team, a friend and volunteer fire chief, of my old county. Sonoma county. Still where I work, was able to get some grants get his crew prevailing wage, and a chipper. And now aid me on cutting and removals on our county roads. It's a win win for sure.

OK, here is something cool for all you motorheads!

Don't you need power to energize the alternator to be able to generate electricity with it? I don't know much about how cars work, but I figure some charge would need to be in the battery, and they key will need to be in a certain position to energize the alternator's rotor. Is the rotor always energized as long as they key is in the run position, or does some electronic management system cut power to the rotor when the engine is not running to save on battery power, or does a relay not get enough power from a weak battery to send power to the rotor?

I'm not sure about all the "new wave" cars, but in the past as long as your key was in the on position, if your alternator was spinning it would produce electricity.

You could actually remove the battery from the car (after starting it) and the car would still run off the alternator.

Back in the day, you could jump start a car with manual transmission (if it had a dead battery) by rolling it downhill and letting the clutch out while in gear.

Doing this could get you home to make your repairs. Newer cars may have features that block this procedure.

The alternator will generate juice if it is spinning even if there is no juice to start it.

You can jump start an old car (stick shift) by rolling it downhill and letting the clutch out even if there is no battery in it.

A generator with no magnetic field can't generate electricity. At a minimum permanent magnets or an energized electromagnet would be needed. Old alternators may have had permanent magnets or maybe there was a magneto on the engine too to at least work the spark plugs. You should know more about it than me.

I don't know exactly how they worked, but I do know they did work.

If you spin an alternator, it will generate electricity. Likely it has permanent magnets, but I never took one apart.

A car will run with the battery removed. Conversely, a charged battery will allow a car with a dead alternator to run for several hours (w/o headlights).

This is just basic crap that everyone used to know ... cars were not as reliable as they are now. You had to know how to get home if you broke down, and if you had a stick shift often your friends would just start pushing your car so you could let out the clutch and jump start it.

We had a runaway log, I don't think my ass was ever that tight..took off on us and was heading down the hill towards the chipper and for some reason it made a right and totaled the guys sidewalk and destroyed his landscaping.

I almost had a heart attack.

Here's where it stopped..made it about 50 yards in total.

I thought for sure it was gonna smash his handrail..it missed everything expensive..thank god.
