That was really hard to drill through. Either my bits were going dull or that's hard stuff. It would have helped if I used very low rpm to start with.
DSC00704 (640x550).jpgI like it this way

I can't tell you a carb setting. I bored my carb and now anything over 2.5 turns is a good tune, even 5.5 turns. Extremely insensitive needle until less than 2.5 turns. All the way in will bring it to the edge of dying from lean surges, but it still goes. It's doing 13,600 at around 3 turns and kept going faster either because it was getting colder around here (denser air) or it was still breaking in.

352 is rock bottom of the Echo line. For not much more you can get a CS-370.

Did a mild muffler mod to my CS-400 today. Got a muffler from a parts saw, de-catted it, and removed the spark arrestor. That done, it is almost as open as the muffler on my CS-500. And, thats about as crazy as I get!

'Nother thing. My beat to death and rebuilt CS-3000 has always been a great little saw, except it required 8-12 pulls to start without fail. I always thought I had the solution in the back of my mind, but just couldn't put it into words. While cranking it over one day, I felt a nerve pinch in my shoulder when the rope reached the end of it's travel. And, the heavens opened and I realized the durn rope was too short! It was only getting like two compression strokes per pull, no wonder it took forever to start. Re-strung the recoil with as much rope as it would hold. Which is still not much, but it now gets around five pops per yank and fires right up like all the others.

Tried out the new and improved CS-400 on a 10" hunny locust log after work. I can definitely tell a difference, it has more grunt and keeps the RPMs up in the middle of the cut. Only slightly louder than it was before too.

Its amazing how much the echos wake up to a muff mod. I barly used my 520 till i gutted the muffler. Its a completely diffrrent saw now.

Tried out the new n' improved CS-400 today, cutting up some exposed roots 3-5" in diameter. She handled it like a champ, however I think it is tuned a bit rich for light work. Had some wetness on the front of the muffler when I was done. I imagine the catalyst that used to be there was burning up the extra fuel as it was designed to do. Probably should tune it for stuff 5-8' in diameter since that is what I usually cut with it.

Joined the Echo club. Picked this up on ebay for 135 shipped. No bar or chain cover. Was told it started hard and rpms fluttered at full throttle. Checked the plug and there was hardly any gap. Regapped plug to .030" and she popped off on 3rd pull. Did a modest muffler mod, pulled limiters and retuned today. Plan on this being my go to firewood saw.20190410_145544.jpg 20190410_145552.jpg 20190410_135000.jpg 20190410_135553.jpg

CS--500P? I got one, great saw!
Just a cs-490. I think they are about the same saw. Put it in wood yesterday and was a little disappointed, think I may need to fatten up the high side some more. I'm sure it needs broken in yet too.

I put my compression tester on it and was only able to get around 100 psi out of it. Is this normal? P/C look brand new and no issues starting but seems on the low side.

I wasn’t happy with my 490 after a muff mod and retune after removing limiter caps. It cut ok but not how I thought it should. I converted it to 3/8 lp, 91VXL and it really cuts now. Not sure on the pressure reading, never checked it.
