So, the 510 is a clamshell design? I thought the 400 was the biggest clamshell they made. The 450 I used to have and my 500P are metal case.

Yes the 510,20,30 are a clamshell design. But the "case" is metal instead of the normal plastic. Very robust/simple design imo. Not a lot of bulk either.

Huh, never heard of that before. So, that means that when removing the crank you just take the caps off the top and out it comes? No heating it up/pressing it out nonsense? Another reason why Echo rocks!

The entire engine is separate from the case. Remove 4 bolts that hold down the engine. Then remove the 4 bolts off the bottom to split the cylinder. Bearings still press on the crank, seals slide in and have separate grooves cut in. No driving seals with this saw.

Only down side is when something does go bad. You have to buy a whole new cylinder/cap. But also have the option of getting an entire new engine.

I was amazed the first time I took a 520 apart. It was just such a simple design, and yet compact and very robust. I only mildly ported mine, but it made a difference. I used it in a thinning job in the UK that lasted a few months off and on. I even dropped a tree on it. It still chugged right along. I also like the sound of the echo mufflers as well when opened up. Just be sure to tighten down that clutch well. The first time I had one back together, I ejected the clutch at 10K RPM's+ and had to replace it.

BTW, Randy walked me through porting it through PM's back in sumfin like 2010, if I recall. Good man, Randy. Especially since I recall having been drinking before I tore into the thing ;)

I'll post the 530 pics/build here too.

Think it cleaned up good enough to use. Just a couple light scratches above the port. Only other option is a 200$ short block. This one appears to have been straight gassed. Clear fuel in the tank.

Also the intake boot was torn along with the oiler damage from chain derail.

Love that Echo howl! Got to looking at the parts list for my 500P and it's sisters the 490 and 501, turns out they have a traditional integral crankcase design, whereas the 450/510/520/530 were metal case clamshells. Maybe Echo decided the integral case would hold up better. I do know my little 400 with it's plastic tank/clamshell crankcase has never given me a bit of trouble and I have used it pretty hard.

Haven't had a chance to time em yet. All the chains were fairly sharp round ground full chisel. Some type of oak. Saw was tuned just under 14k.

The 510 seems stronger of the 2. Both run very good and definatly stronger then stock. I seem to like the 510 the best. Wonder if they will pull that 32 like your ported 490 did? Nice work

The 510 definitely feels more aggressive, probably the better limber of the 2. The 5000 just has a different exhaust tone. Cut times are similar, slightly favoring the 510.

I need to freshen the chains and try again

As for the 32, both of these saws feel really similar to the 490. I would say the 490 falls right in between. Just by feel 510,490,5000 but no longer have the 490 to compare.

Once we get @Woodpecker 501 ported we can see how they stack up.
