Warning- TL/DB
Well, since I started it, maybe I can wrap it up. It's been a good 10 years since I did much with a chainsaw, and 15-20 since anything "serious". The Poulan/Craftsman top-handle was easy to start from day one in 1986. Just an hour ago I got re-acquainted with how easy my H-350 starts with that compression release. I was spoiled. So lately, that Jonsered CS2238 was really causing me fits. As if it looked up at me and said "So you think you can still start a chainsaw?! Get a load of this!"

So I was curious. And I learned everything that I hoped for, and a whole bunch more. Mission accomplished. Thank you all.

Quick update. Got the spring-assist upgrade to the Jonsered- thanks for that tip. "Easy" start- no. Easier start- yes. Once I had it in my hands, the concept is simple and effective: you store energy in the assist spring as you encounter compression nearing TDC. At TDC the stored energy is released, giving a more robust "spin" just when you want it. Also seems to cure the wrong-way jerk. There's no free lunch- you do the same work. But spread out over time, not concentrated right at TDC.
