Drill jig is now in Los Angeles. I'm getting anxious to see if this tool attachment will live up to my expectations. I have one seriously damaged drill bit from trying to hand sharpen on the bench grinder. It will be the ultimate test.
For badly damaged or broken bits it is better to hand grind to the basic shape, then use the Dr.

I have been at this game for 3 decades.
The cutting performance of my drill bits determined my productivity, which in turn determined my paycheck.

I love grinding drill bits freehand and see the coworkers jaw drop to the floor as I do it.

To me grinding drill bits freehanded is like what to some of You guys is square filing chains freehanded.

I wish I had the skills :p
I can get fairly close by hand, but…

Whilst i can get an approximately accurate edge on a drill bit by hand that impresses the coworkers, i have not been able to get the split accurately, or a precise 118° angle for a non split... so i find it easier to use the Dr...LOL

Don't order from China. I did by accident and did not notice til after the order was placed and processed. Received was a pair of pants. 1. Not my size, 2. Strange 3. Ugly, 4. You couldn't pay me to wear them in public.

Maybe I'll bite the bullet and force myself to learn to hand sharpen. Not happy!!!

Now, if that ain't a good reason to learn hand grinding.

I'd say, my second attempt at hand sharpening drill bits was a success. Large bits so is easy to see the angles. Perhaps it was a good thing my Chinese tool turned out the be a pair of (woman's?) pants.

Is there some kind of tutorial online on the proper angles and procedure for grinding a drill bit? I can grind HSS tools for my lathe of all shapes and sizes. So surely with some practice I can grind a drill bit also.

I tried watching those and failed.

I guess You can't watch someone explain how to do something You know how to do.
It felt long-winded with too many steps.

I went thru all my drill bits and sharpened them. From my experiences and watching those videos the "jig" would not have worked as well. The rolling of the bit at the conclusion of the rotation would not have been accomplished with the jig. Probably better then throwing them away, but after doing a dozen or so bits it is not at all difficult. Gots to wear my reading glasses to do it properly and have to dress the grinding wheel. I'll likely never have to buy or replace bits ever again. Mission accomplished.

From the video I ordered a Diamond Point Wheel Dresser.

Good to hear, it’s not that hard with a little hand and eye coordination, some practice it’s done , ✅ a magnifying glass light mounted in front of wheel helps to , if ur doing them frequently, especially small drills.

On a single drill bit that is maybe 3 inches long you can practice maybe a 100 sharpenings. A low cost lesson that pays off forever.

I was out doing them in freezing temps. I was eager to accomplish this lesson. Well worth IT!
