If you are using it on small single cylinder 4 cycle engines like lawnmowers, wood splitters, etc. it doesn't matter because they spark at TDC every time, just like 2 cycle engines. It gets more complex with multi-cylinder engines. Most tachs can toggle through different settings to give an accurate reading for a particular engine. The cheap Chinese-made tachs on Amazon/ebay are supposed to, but may not due to faulty cheap construction and lack of good instructions on how to get them to toggle.
The Stihl EDT 9 tach you mentioned is supposed to do 2 and 4 cycle engines and twin cylinder engines according to the info I found.
Some of the tachs on Amazon/ebay are cheaply made lookalike copies of quality made tachs that do work properly. Beware.
