What do I know? Well fer starters I spent many years in the welding racket.
While I was never the best at pretty alum. tig welding, stick was my strong point. The pic of that weld and the dialog about it do not match
Bingo.

You are right on my friend.

I’m surprised aluminum can even be stick welded from the comments. I’ve never heard of it before.

Because every process that came along after it was so much better, stick welding was pretty much eclipsed. HeliArc being best followed by MIG. Which you will find both in any good welding shop. SMAW of Aluminum is/should be the last case scenario of choices. Maybe a home type shop only has a stick welder and needs to make a repair, if you're out of choices this is a little better than nothing. Especially if a fella is willing to take his time and not afraid to do it over a couple times until it takes. Just like any other process the base metal needs to be clean, and if not totally will have slag/gas pockets etc., which will need to be ground out and gone over again. If the job is real important it would be better to take it to a shop with better equipment to handle the job better.
I think Squeels was feeling a little snarky maybe, as he really didn't use aluminum foil I don't think, and if he did Squeels is the man...or the pig? Lol
