Thanks Dall -- I can see the extra "hole" where that wire would go right next to black wire.
To save time to see it run tonight I put it the way the owner had it (which works fine -- all functions / stop switch working).

Video below of it cutting w/ new 16" bar and chain.
May need some tuning and a new air filter + rim sprocket and this thing is like a tank and will probably run for a long time yet.

She's an oldie -- has old style chain tensioner not sure when Stihl switched to side chain tensioner.

Wish me luck guys -- I just made the offer for that 10mm 044 that I had at the GTG. He'll have a running 028 for infrequent cutting and some money in his pocket for a really clean an barely used 044 from 1997 w/ the KS cylinder, 10mm wrist pin (although I've read 10mm crank in some places -- what exactly is 10mm vs 12mm on these?) All I know is it's a great exhaust note especially with a maxflow filter on it.

Eric, I don't think the green wire should be fed through that hole, but I am not familiar with the 028 saws. I can take a pic of my 026 for the wiring route tomorrow if you like. Just let me know.
The 028 sounds good. Maybe needs a carb kit?

Hey Jeff -

Here's a picture of how it all goes from a youtube video I found of a guy going through a carb rebuild on an 028AV -- as @dall said the spark plug wire should not go under the top cover and the white wire in this picture is fed through the same grommet as the black wire and goes into an eyelet that goes under the top cover bolt as seen here. Mystery solved! Thanks guys for the tips.

And I might add -- it's amazing what some people will do to really hack things up... I'm no "expert" but try to make things "correct" anyway... Sheesh.

Ok. That photo looks like my 026. Those 2 wires should go through a small black rubber grommet in the top. One goes to the operating lever and one goes to the metal piece used to stop the engine. Basically a ground.

Was not sure of the wiring on that saw, but knew the brown tube was part of the tank vent.

Best of luck with the 044 offer!!! That is a nice running saw.

The piston wrist pin is 10 mm instead of 12 mm (like on 046/460/660). Also, the lower rod bearing is smaller, and I have heard this is where some saws had trouble. Likely they were running dull chains and pushing lean mix, etc.

The crank for a 12 mm saw will not fit in a 10 mm case w/o modification. The smaller case volume may also give these saws a slight advantage, similar to crank stuffers.

Any news on your offer?

Any news on your offer?

So the owner has one project he wants to do clearing some trees on some land in New Hampshire.
Once that is done he will likely sell me the saw. I sweetened the offer by an additional $50 and he really wants to finish with that project first.
No problem -- Hoping I'll have the saw by spring!

Cool. Which models are 10mm? 044 or 440?
