Got this D-44 running tonight. Turns out that despite all the name changes and buy outs between Power Products, Lauson and Tecumseh that the carbs must not have changed much. I was able to go through this carb with a generic Tecumseh kit from the jungle website.

Do any of the members here know anything about this model of Craftsman saw?
It was recently given to me, and I don’t know much at all about it.

Here is the owner's manual and IPL all rolled into one....3.7 hp, 30.5cc

Judging by the cartoons and the recommendation to use 16:1 fuel/oil mixture, its been around a while (1974-1976).

Poulan 3800. Should have chrome piston and bare bore. Thick rings. All good saws in that series. Look at the date stamps in the top cover. Probably later 80’s or so.

Thanks fellas! It seemed to be a pretty nice saw, which it looks like it is. It doesn’t run now, but I’m sure we can get that taken care of.

You're welcome.

A few things that might be helpful.

The starter pulleys on those saws are fragile due to age and start to break. OEM ones are scarce but you could purchase an aftermarket one on Amazon.com
Lil Red Barn Starter Rope Pulley Compatible With Poulan 3400 Chainsaws Replaces Part # 530028487

Both crank bearings are cupped needle bearings and have 0.005 - 0.006" of radial play so don't worry about that. It's normal

Compression always to appear low but 125 to 130 psi is normal. Squish is around 0.040"

In addition to Tim’s comments, the oil pump is impulse driven. Not the strongest, but if needed, I’ve found cutting a fresh gasket, a new pickup (Tygon) and sometimes a new diaphragm using nylon insert sheet stock (punched using the old as a template), brings them back to new. If the diaphragm is stiff from sitting for 35+ years, they struggle. Be mindful there is a good seal around the impulse port in the case. Air leak. A little Motoseal seal helps. When running at throttle, they should sling a decent line. Manual override helps.
