Converting full chisel to ripping chain

I have a loop of .325 full chisel that a buddy of mine wants made into a ripping chain, how do I setup my grinder to do so?

Regular chain cuts faster, but leaves a rougher finish. For an actual milling chain, you’d swing the vise 10° and tilt the head about 30° from vertical. Most ripping chains are also missing the top plate of every other cutter. They leave it full height, but it’s just for scoring.
Depends on the saw but you usually want rakers about .005 - .010” lower than for bucking

It's for his 51. He's not doing any milling, it's just for when he cuts a stump occasionally.

a ripping chain has a top plate at either 0* 5* or 10*. It is slow cutting and yes as Kevin says the depth gauge is lower.
I’ve tested a ripping chain crosscutting to see if the would stretch before milling. with a ripping chain it’s rough on the hands, saw as it kicks about.

if your just stumping then a top plate of 25* would be quicker and a bit more durable and quicker. And I’d leave the depth gauges std

as for the scoring cutters (granburg ripping chain), it’s meant to help… but I think it’s almost a s good as using a skip chain/semi skip etc. Bigger bars + less teeth = quicker filing…

I think the scoring cutters have more to do with improved finish, maybe don't rip out as many fibers...

as milling wood is mostly still green they help to clear the chips

I've got a short loop of ripping chain I think came over on the Mayflower .The cutters are filed straight across and slow as a snail .It's a 70 driver for a 20" loop for a 10 series McCulloch .Hanging on a nail were it probably will remain forever .

So worh the table set 30° from vertical you would have little less of a gullet?( less c shape) im honna make a new chain maybe tomorrow so i may copy you angles and give it a try. I think mine is set at about 50ish now

That’s just what I’ve seen done. The idea is that it’ll stay sharper longer

I checked.thebtable.befor I sharpened my chain and it was already 30° from verticle. I took 2 strokes off the raker and wow what a differance. It cuts way faster.
Now I was also wondering, the 066 has an 8 pin sprocket, should i be running a 7?

Switched to a 7 pin sprocket today and tried making a board. Way better i think. I could probly take another swipe off the rakers.
