Well...you aren’t out there cutting cookies in straight clear wood that’s for sure. Kind of like milling on a windy day, and I see some fines past my filter when I clean it, name of the game. They help clean the carbon out anyway...right?

The filter is filtering fine it is just sneaking past the lock nut

That is part of the reason I like my 462s!

Guys that are using 500i’s for a living have opinions far more meaningful than mine. And they seem satisfied enough.

But for their flagship saw at a very flagship price, its seems like Stihl should have gotten the filtration piece right.

Bit more difficult/less reliable to get air injection in a saw with the carb in the handle. I’m guessing Stihl went with that style rather than the 462 look so it still had some traditional looks to it. An air injection boot probably wouldn’t last long wedged between the recoil and tank handle.

I'm sure each saw has their own niche ... and a ported 462 will not run with a ported 500i, but a ported 462 will embarrass a stock 500i, and will sip a lot less fuel and keep it's filter cleaner, so if you don't need the power of a ported 500i ... just sayin.

They meet my needs, but everyone has different needs. I get that.

The 500i reminds me a lot of a replacement for the old 064 ... great power to weight ratio. But if you just need a replacement for a 440 or 460 or 372 ...

Best way to put it is the 462 is an east coast saw the 500 is the wet coast saw from day one with a few issues to start with. The 500 is in the Husky 390 class of saw without the filtration, stiffer av, and the better oiling of the Husky.

To be super unapologetic, I’ve been running Stihl saws in this size for a while now and the MS 462 just does not have the grunt the 046,460 and 461 have. You can feel it when you’re stumping with a long bar on and it’s amplified when you’re on steep ground with big trees.

I’ve now put a little bit of time in with an MS 500i and it has all of the missing pieces of the 462 I’ve been looking for in a proper 461 replacement. Sure, it could be refined some, and I don’t doubt it will in updates or future models. But for now I’m sure I could live with knocking out my air filter some if I can spend less time in the danger zone on the stump. Stopping the chain because the saw didn’t have the extra snot I needed and leaving me in a bind isn’t really an acceptable outcome.

Especially when you're falling snags on a fire - you can't be in the bite anymore than what's absolutely necessary.

Ya know JJ, that may just be where I spend most of my time on a saw these days and it may keep the little things with these saws front and center. ;)

That looks like a unit that I cut on up on top of Signal Tree. There miles and miles of that repainted stand in that area...

Is that BLM ground... ?
8 mile marker on Signal Tree. Were you cutting for Lynrd Warren?

View attachment 286707These dawgs look pretty aggressive. I’ll see how they work for me tomorrow.

I had a set of those on the 500. They made the saw a little grabby. Swapped it for the set on my 660 and they worked fine on it. Hope you have better luck with them!

Yeah, they might be a little too aggressive for my chains, but I’m cutting close to the road today, so I’ll give it a go. If it’s too much, I’ll go right back to my old ones, lol.
