About fifteen years ago, I bought an old Homelite saw from a very good friend and mentor of mine...all I know was that it was a XL Automatic, the serial plate indicated the SN was 21896 11P...but that's all I knew about it.
After I bought it, I got it into shape, didn't take much, just got a new chain for it, had the old one sharpened, bought a case for it like I do for all my saws...no nudity allowed...used it for a while then broke into the modern world with several Stihls...and the old guy was put away.
About three years ago, I broke it out, started it, and it was pretty obvious that I needed to rebuild the carb. Made a few inquiries, again, didn't really know what I had...so I didn't follow up to buy the kit. Today, it was raining, blew out my cutting plans, so I went out, got the case and saw, emptied out the oil water in it, no harm to the saw. Did my research, and...what I have is an XL-500, about fifty years old...now I know I have a Tillotson HS-4D carb, will get that bad boy running again, and get it back in the orchards! No paint needed, it's old, it don't need to look new, and it's in fair shape cosmetically...green and red, probably 85-90% of the paint is remaining...and it all tells a story!
