I've never pulled the muffler, no. I know it has a different piston, because the old one is still here:

I'm a noob to chainsaws, but oily film type stuff tends to migrate and change patterns as the piston travels in the cylinder. This stuff is stationary.

Yeah........but I was hoping to make you feel better. :D

I don't know the history of your build. Did he re-use your old cylinder and just replace the piston/ring?

My next question.

When I picked up the saw, it was missing the recoil start assembly and the piston and cylinder were borked as you saw with the piston above. The agreed-upon terms included repairing the original, sexy cylinder. It's an early 'D' with gorgeous timing. It was to receive a port job. The PTO side bearing and seal were trashed, so I was to receive brand new oem bearings and seals. All rubber bits were gone through, the carb rebuilt. New aftermarket piston and rings.

He replaced the missing start assembly, and replaced the melty plastics on it, which were greatly appreciated.

I'm thinking the jug wasn't cleaned up well enough. :(

What saw is that?
It's Jake's.

Cylinders get sold and traded. The builder doesn't always know the history of it. If it looks good it gets used.

It may or may not pertain to anything done in this thread, just simply stating that it does happen. A few respectable builders plus myself missed it the first time.

Since my eyes aren't the best, if I want to see something very clearly, I take a close-up pic(s) with my phone with the flash on. The I load the pics onto my computer and open them in Paint. It's looking through a microscope!
Blasphemy.

Or so I've heard
