Having a guitar doesn’t make you a musician. Having a gun doesn’t make you a gunfighter. I’ve mostly just learned by doing and I’m no pro. Don’t see it discussed much on the inter webs. Recommendations on where to find tips and tricks and dos and don’ts? Or a section for it? @Mastermind

The I.S.A. has some training material. The wildland ,usda has a pretty good syllabus also and is available online.

Seems like something more east coast and arborist style would be better for you and I...?
I rarely get tall straight trees and room to fell them...

It most definitely would, but Ive always wanted to go fall some big west coast timber and this is a way to do it and learn something in the process

Hmm. I should look in one of my early 70's vintage saw owner's manuals. Back then they probably had some good instructions. Or not. Who knows lol.

Find a logger and bug the hell out of them. Or, learn the basics and practice but don't be stupid! The only training I got was my dad watching me cut for a few minutes, then he told me a few things to correct and told me to have one of my brothers go with me if I was gonna be running a saw.

All the stihl manuals have the basics of felling a tree in them. It’s the finer points it don’t have.

I will say some of these finer points can only be learnt from practical experience. even thou there is heaps of info on the net.

There’s nothing like a personal tutor telling you what you should be thinking and doing while felling a few difficult trees.

then there’s the refining your techniques and cuts & not getting your bar pinched.

I’ve learnt a lot from the Bc faller vids and a lot went over my head when I first watched them thou.

Now that I'm thinking about it, a neighbor had a really good how-to manual on tree stuff (probably from Bailey's or Madsen's), next time I see him I'll see if I can get the name of it.

Doug Dent's book is about the best "manual" for falling and bucking timber around, but it's primarily geared for western Conifer type timber falling.

I was lucky enough to go to one of his in-person classes he did for the Forest Service in 1996. He was a very fine man - very smart and funny and an excellent teacher.

Check out “fundamentals of general tree work” by GF Beranek. Book is real good, thumb drives even better.

Also, you can hang out with Mr. Beranek on the TreeHouse forum.
