Chain identification

[I Know Something]

Need some help identifying this chain pitch. Unless my migraine is keeping me from reading it right. Its bigger then a .404. A guy I work with baught a farm and this was hanging in his barn next to a Harley Davidson chainsaw. It fits in it is what he claims. He spent the summer getting it running. Just needs a sharpened chain now. But I dint know the pitch so he can possibly get a replacement. A 3/8th is in the background for comparison.

Thanks for any help. I've not yet found a chain like this. It's kinda cool actually.

Don't think anyone produces 1/2" chain anymore. I've got a few loops off old saws. Best posting up a WANTED thread and likely someone will get you what you need. Count how many links are on the loop and maybe check the gauge too. Harley Davidson chainsaw ay....never seen one of dem. Maybe David Bradley?

There were a variety of chain types and sizes made over the years. Many are considered 'obsolete', or just 'NLA' (no longer available). Guys occasionally stumble across 'barn finds' of old chain loops, saws with chains, partial reels, etc. Collectors on sites like these sometimes have them (as well as eBay, etc.) but they know that they are scarce.

Acre's site ( @OldJack post above) can be a good resource. 1/2" pitch was common on Homelite Zip saws. This chain gauge lists some of the other sizes that were available at some point:



It might be possible to also find a .404 sprocket for that saw (?) if it is something that you want to cut with.

I'm "told" it's a HD saw. I haven't seen it yet. I got it all sharpened, cleaned up and sent back. I told him if he gets to using it, I want to be there to record it. I'm intrigued.

The chain its self is a .063. 99 drivers. And quite a bit filed away. Still usable. But the original owner appeared to not know how to use a file.

If I can get this under video, I'll definitely post and share.

P.s. the only markings on the chain was the number 96.

The 52L .404 listed as .063 Super chisel is probably the sharpest chain I've ever taken out of a box.
I was making a loop of it in my wood shed and dropped it, putting it in the spinner and when I grabbed it up the chain hit the back of my hand and cut me 4 times.

A Harley collector/was dealership Mount Vernon Illinois, has an airplane, HD power, variety of other stuff including a knucklehead trike w/shaft drive. Prototype for Canadian armed forces wwll, not production run item. Dale is the mans name I believe. Moved museum over on to Appalachian mounts I believe.
May be the best informed I know of. If he is asked prolly want to acquire to add to collection.
Harley-Davidson motor works. Sold motors outright early on. Use determined by buyer
