Hi folks

I recal a discussion in a thread somewhere a while back where @jmssaws and I were saying how easy it was to split a case using just heat.
From memory I said I would do a video so this arvo I got my daughter to hold the phone while I cracked open an old 038 magnum.

You will notice I start heating the case on the outer extremities to warm it and get the outside expanding first.
I then move inwards and finally concentrate on the area around the bearing.

You want it good and hot but not too hot.
Keep the flame moving so you don't burn the paint and once it sizzles spit, it should just tap off.

Just remember you want to heat the case and get it to expand with minimal heat getting into the bearing so it doesn't expand as well.

If it won't tap out it's not hot enough.

Was going to make it in 1 video but my daughter stopped it after the first half came off

Just asking, but would a heat gun work too? Would a heat gun be able to get the case hot enough?

Thanks for the video.
Yes but it's possible to get the bearing hot by the time the case is hot enough.
If you use a heat gun I would think you would want to keep it away from the bearing or use a splitter along with it

I have the Husky case splitter, leaves the bearings in the case.
Last time I removed bearings thusly:

And it was quick also.
You can just see the large brass drift propping up the heat gun handle. Same drift popped out the bearing.

A word on assembly .I suppose everyone has a favorite method, this is mine . Freeze the crankshaft with the bearings attached .Heat one side of the crankcase bearing pocket with a heat gun, install .Do the other side likewise . It works very well for me.Maybe a little thump with a soft faced hammer every know and again .

Now how about a vid of going back togather or at least the process. Good job with the vid man

Yep, will do.
I will get my trusty camera woman who is full of safety tips to help out.
There is more than one way to skin the cat with assembly. I will video how I skin it.

Fantastic! Like how you went to hammer it apart and it popped apart.

Haha, yeah, I picked it up thinking that this one time it would be a bugger to get out as I was making a video and it fell out.
I was happy with that.

I worked for years in a workshop re-building electric motors and learnt all the tricks of using heat to disassemble and reassemble stuff.
When reassembling I use a small pie oven as it gives me good even controlled heat

I like to seat the bearings in the case first, but if that works for ya then carry on. :beer-toast1:
