Carbide 3/8 LP

What a disappointment I have in the Oregon 3/8 lp carbide chain. I have about 30 Bradford pear stumps to remove so I brought an Oregon version as it was described by my vendor's catalog as rated for cutting stumps. It wont even cut without a lot effort. I have better luck with my regular Timber Ridge SC chain and the normal chain definite cost a lost than that $130 chain.

I might go through several regular chains but I will never recommend the 3/8 lp carbide chain use to anyone. Matter of fact I am going to complain to my vendor about this.

i use the stihl carbide sometimes it cuts a little slower but lasts a long time last time i used it i was cutting wood with 2 inches of ice and dirt on it

A little slower I expected but not like putting the chain on backwards. It looked like powder post beetles was at work on the across the stump cut and not much better at the cross cut either. Now if I rock the saw it would try to cut but this something I don't normally need to do any of the saws I repair or have used over the years.

As I said it is a super big disappointment.

i cut about 8 8 foot truck bed loads with the first stihl carbide chain i bought another so i had a extra one i did not baby the first chain because i wanted to see what it would do and how long it would last the logs was in a pile and then skidded in mud and was in the 20s when i was cutting i had it on a 026 because the 325 chain was cheaper than the 3/8

It's something that people don't expect with carbide chain. Since it is harder, it is also more brittle; so the bevels cannot be sharpened to as fine of an angle as conventional steel cutters. That's one of the reasons you don't see it used as much as people might expect.

You might still try experimenting with lowering the depth gauges a bit, since you already have it, and see if that makes any difference.

My Stihl carbide tipped 3/8" LP is STILL in its box.

But I hope to get the next years firewood processing going anytime now, just have to finish more important stuff around the house at this point.

I'm anxious to see how it will behave.

Are you sharpening carbides yourself? Only carbide I've used is 'bullet chain' on Cutters Edge fire department ventilation saw.

i havent sharpened yet i havent gotten a diamond file yet a regular file or grinder wheel wont touch the carbides

Very interesting. When looking at some old chain patents, I saw something like that years ago - assumed that it was an idea that never got implemented.
