Got myself a HDA 198 this weekend, now to get it installed and see if there is any tuning differences between it and the 199 with a accelerator pump.
I installed a 191 on Friday.
From my understanding, the 191 is same as 198 except doesn't have the plastic spacer.

Does the 191 have the accelerator pump in it? The 198 didn't have the Brass plug by the throttle shaft on it.
From my understanding that is where the pump is.

The way I understand it, the 190 & 191 where used in the XPG models.
190 being non EPA and 191 for the EPA.

The non EPA XPG carbs are 174 & 198 according to the IPL's .....but who really knows.

190&191 where used on 357/359 with carb heat elements, most of my 357XPG (5 bodies) didnt have carb heat elements and came from the factory with 199 carb.

I'm a bit surprised if 191 doesnt have acc pump since it was a EPA carb, but then, nothing really surprise me anymore with Husky :D

Well if I don't like the 198 I'll try a 191.......That 199 I had on was so touchy on the screws it wasn't even funny.
Brian...i think its a Yr manufacture thing as well as EPA and heating. Look at the intake clamp on these IPL's ..early saws had 174/175 1999 onwards and by 2002/3 they had the 190 191 198 199 with the saws that had that "Auto de comp" . There also seems to have been a.. "A".. versions of these carbs later on (after 2003). In yr 2007 (as per second pic) ..there was a second attempt at "auto De comp ..i think. Click on second small image for other carbs ..Hope that is of some use.
PS: I had a 198 on mine ...no pump if memory serves !! :D ..ok in the end after ultra sonic and new carb kit...good responder.

With regard to the mode of failure - it could be the brass piston is corroding and getting stuck in the bore, or it could be the rubber o-ring is swelling, possibly due to ethanol gas. I might try soaking the piston once removed from the carb body in ethanol free gas to see if that alleviates the problem. If not, and if the brass is galled/scored, if anyone wants to send me a defective 199 accelerator pump (and possibly a 199 for test fit) I can blueprint it and turn a couple duplicates out on the lathe in brass or bronze. Finding a replacement o-ring would be up to you.

When I was building my 359 I procured a 175 for it from eBay. It was advertised as a 359 carb and has the accel pump. Works well, saw runs good. Seems there are quite a few options for the 357/9 saws in terms of Walbro carb models
