I know little about winches but, don't their rating go down significantly with the more length out? I was thinking like 5000lbs for electric. My tractor only weighs about 2700 lbs.

Its actually the other way around. Winches stated ratings are on the first wrap of the drum. They drop at the second wrap, and again at the third etc. I don't recall what the percentages are......

A little quality time with a calculator and a couple measurements, are needed, if a fella really wanted to know. Diameter of the winch drum empty, and diameter of the cable. Even that won't be 'exact', as you would otherwise have to factor in the squish of the cable under the next wrap under load, but if you are that close to the limits, like as not you need a bigger winch anyways. :)

Or a stronger anchor, a sheave, and more patience.

Got my eyes on this winch. Might have my hands on it this weekend. What do you think its worth? Hes asking $200.

What do you think it would take to hook the tractor pto to that pto input shaft? Ideas?

It looks good and heavy enough. I’d run it with the pto, just add a 1/4” shear bolt and cage the shaft.

I built this winch a few years ago.. Close you’re eyes if you the safely Police.

Lots of different ends available on PTO shafts that will hook direct, all you need to really know is how long you want it and the diameter of the input shaft.

Worst case, you buy a standard round hole end PTO shaft and make up a bushing to allow it to bolt up. Common as dirt onna farm.

Might be best to wait until you have it in hand, and pretty much worked out the mounting position before actually buying the shaft, but a look at the various source sites might give you a better idea what is out there.

Depending upon the loads and the tractor HP the shafts are rated and built differently. Before you buy the heaviest one, keep an eye on the idea that you would probably want the PTO or something outside the tractor to blow up before whatever is inside the tractor eats itself. $$ vs. $$$$

No idea. The guy said it has no rating on it but was told 8 ton. Looks too small to me for being 8 ton but idk the ratio or anything.

Half of that is still 8000 pounds worth of force. Lots. Esp, on a smaller tractor. 16000 pounds is a lot of force! If you don't have some background in cable safety, it'd be a good thing to read up on. A snapped cable can kill ya pretty messy.
If you are able, bend up a crank out of 1/4 inch rod to be able to spin the input shaft with, nothing too fancy, just something to stick in the bolt hole. If I am right, the lever is a dog clutch to allow you to pull or lower under load, and the knob is the freewheel unit.
Not really rocket surgery, but finding parts to replace anything broken inside the gearbox is probably a non-starter, and it might be worth a poke and prod there, instead of after it goes home with ya.

It'll give you an idea of the ratio of the gearbox, that at 540 rpm PTO speed will give you some idea of how fast it may be. Or how slow.

that looks alot like a braden lu-4 winch, but the handle for engaging it is different, maybe a copy by a different manufacturer? a LU-4 is rated at 7-8K lbs., they came off of military M-37's
i have one that was chain driven off the pto of a ford naa with a boom for skidding...i dont have pics of it on the tractor , but i think i posted pics of it all together on the ground (winch + boom) a couple years ago on AS, ill see if i still have them

I'll ask him if there are any markings on it. That thing is a beast. Is it finished and working?

was finished and working about 40 years ago... was my dads...him and my grandpa built it, i was a little kid when he sold the tractor, so i dont remember it on there, but it looks like it bolted to the axle and uses the top link on the back of the boom...

So this followed me home today. F'er is stout and heavy. It's defiantly military grade and had very little use. Guy said the cable still had a heavy layer of rust inhibitor on it when he first bought it. He tried to use it with hydraulic motor setup but could never get both the right torque and line speed he was after without spending a lot of money. Said he bought it for $400 some time ago.

Used the come-a-long to get the winch out of the trunk.

these are meant to be PTO driven off the transmission of the truck they came out of, (much higher rpm than you will likely get out of a hydraulic motor with the same power) thats why mine was chain driven off the pto shaft of the tractor...i believe it was just a 1:1 ratio between the sprockets.
