After reading a bit here on the forum its my understanding that the all in one Breaker + Spinner combos are less than desirable.

Does that include this style of all in one Breaker / Spinner from Tecomec?

Is seems they make a few different heavy duty models & sizes in this style (1/4-404, .404± & Double) so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them. The instructions look as if you need to use an annoying little Allen wrench for different steps of the process, whereas separate Breaker / Spinners don't need that type of attention to work properly.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I tried it. Had big expectations for it. Thought it would be a good, compact, option. Did not like it.

Lots of little pieces to keep track of. Takes some change over to go between breaking and spinning; something that I do surprisingly often when making loops, or repairing chains.

My preference is for the standard size, individual spinners and breakers from Tecomec, Oregon, etc., or the Carlton, Woodland Pro models.

They hold up, and parts are readily available. They can be mounted on a board for portability and storage.

Seller ArcherPlus on eBay has a good deal on the individual Tecomec models, as a set, in Archer blue.

I will try to post a link to an earlier review.

Here is a link to my review on Arboristsite, with some photos, the Owners Manual, etc.

Philbert! Thank you! Cool man, I knew I could count on this forum for some quick info 🤙.

Im intrigued for the same exact reason you were, compact size, all in one, etc. The small parts changeover is what I'm not to hot about though. I have a feeling, most would echo your sentiment too. Now, if I had two of them individually setup for Breaking & Spinning... that might be a less aggravating setup.

Let me ask you about the more traditional Tecomec styles..

Can you drive out bar rivets with them? Or do I need something like the Oregon Heavy Duty DuraMax model (Oregon 24548-Si) I achieve that efficiently.

I'm really on the fence regarding the Brakers, if I can do bar rivets too by spending a little more on the Oregon HD unit, I didn't mind doing so. But if I can get away with doing that on the smaller more traditional Breaker, then id like to save the $$.

Additionally, I also don't think there'd be enough room to drive out bar rivets on the CRM style Breaker, so that's another knock against it.

I bought the archer spinner. It works like it should. I use my dremel with a cutting wheel to grind off the rivets and push them out. I read about the combo units and decided I didn't want one. I was planning on eventually buying a breaker but no more chains than I do, I'll just stick with grinding them.

You just have to be careful when punching out rivets on chains or bars, make sure you center up to punch out the soft metal area. I had many co-workers that would get in a hurry and punch down on hardened metal and shatter the tip. They are not too expensive to replace, but if you take your time then they will last a long while.

The store I worked for bought a new Stihl breaker and spinner (separate units) and were tossing out the older Oregon units. Luckily with the approval of one of the bosses, they got tossed my way, I have a punch and two spinners, one set up for 3/8" and the other .325". If I had not gotten one of these, I probably would have gotten the Harbor Freight all-in-one unit.

That is why it is important to buy a spinner / breaker set where replacement parts (especially punches and anvils) are available.

Some use the same, or identical parts, and can be found at multiple dealers. Some are supported by the original sellers.

Good luck with cheap eBay or Amazon products.

You can get a fatter punch for bar rivets, works great. I’ve also used worn out regular punch tips :p

You mean like this?

Yes, something like that. I wasn't sure if it would over stress or be extremely difficult with smaller chassis/handle units compared to the larger, heavier DuraMax models.

What is that, a Sprocket nose anvil? Sheesh, I totally forgot about the anvil requirement, I hadn't thought that far ahead.

A little off topic here, but not completely....
Was Stihl RSK saw chain discontinued? My local dealer swears he can still get it.

LET THE BUYER BEWARE!

IMG_8510.jpeg

Ran across this combined spinner / breaker set on eBay (multiple seller listings).

I spoke to one of the main Archer importers / distributors about it.

It is NOT an Archer product.
It is NOT made in the USA.
It is not even a ‘knockoff’ (Archer does not make a similar model).

It is just a rip-off of their brand name, applied to a cheaply made product.

For reference, note how many of the ads for these show bicycle chain, or industrial roller chain, in the background!

Note: Archer DOES sell a version of the Tecomec spinner and breaker set, which is good quality, and can be a good deal.

That's the spinner I have, the real archer. No complaints.

I never had to repair a chain and loops here cheaper than buy rolls and make loops.

Wow, am I reading that correctly? It's cheaper to buy per loop where your from?

Here in the US, I'm hoping to find a Stihl eBay deal that puts me somewhere around the 50% off mark (not including breaking/spinning equipment). Around here, a 72dl 3/8 STIHL loop is over $40.

Of course after I've already invested in the Breaker side of things, I'm just now noticing I can get Oregon Loops for half the cost of Stihl (all these years I never payed attention to how much less expensive Oregon is - face palm). It's ok though because I'll be selling the future Stihl loops I make to my employer, who always buys loops locally at full cost.

I have jumped the gun and purchased half a dozen Dolmar 099 (Oregon "something-something") loops that don't fit any of my bars.
BEST chains ever, except maybe full chisel 3/8" Husqvarna X-Cut (really impressive chain!!!).

I can not use them and will have to spin them down to 72/84DL, and spin some up to 115DL.

Still, the price was too good to pass and I bought them.

I have both an Oregon spinner and breaker.
And thanks to @hacskaroly & @SOS Ridgerider I will have a good supply of various master links! :beer-toast1: 🍻

The great thing about having your own spinner and breaker is that any loops and scraps you get can be reconfigured to what you need, hit a nail? Knock out the bad section and add in good. Gives you options!
