Hi guys.. New member first post. In search of a Stihl 170,180 or similar to rebuild. Like to try a top end rebiuld. Never done one before looks pretty straight forward. Tks

I have a ms180 here that has been stright gased pulled it apart looks to be a real pain to rebuild. 026 a lot more easy.
I've read that the non pro saws are a pain due to the handle bar removal and reassembly??

I believe it needs crank seals, I bought it as a non running project and I've never got around to fixing it.

No to cut in on magicman, but I have an 024 project.... dirty and cheap. Where are you located?

I've done a 170 and had half what a new one costs in the rebuild. Not a hard saw to work on. Just maybe not worth it.

Not bad at all once u learn the clamshell system. Once u have the handlebar/cover/carb/muffler /clutch off the motor unbolts from the bottom with 4 bolts and the whole motor pulls out the left side. The casing on thoso r plastic and not the most durable in the homeowner/ farmranch version of Stihl saws. The Pro line of Stihls have magnesium casing and removable head and much better build quality. If lookin for a small saw theres alota good pro saws out, Stihl 241c, 026, 260,261, 261c, Husky has several older models Im not that familar with that the guys here can recommend, 42, 55, but my favorite huskies are the husky 346xp and the 550xp. Dolmar 420/421 and 5105. Jonesred 2253. Hope that helps alil buddy
