I'm glad no one is really an authority on these matters to say the least.

Also you are the only one who said anything about "how we're doing it all wrong" in case you hadn't noticed.

If only one guy came forward doesn't mean others didn't notice it. The meek shall inherit the Earth. The uneducated pine fallers will inherit a lesson in up close and personal rapid soil compaction.

Fair enough, I think I explained the situation well enough. One thing they say about opinions.. Everyone seems to have one.

By the time I got there the face cut was done. Had to do what we had to do with the bad situation as safely as possible. I definitely won't turn him loose alone on a tree like that ever again.
It definitely wasn't a "how to" video...

Thank you, it is much appreciated, especially from soldiers of that era. There wasn't exactly a warm welcome home for most of these servicemen.
It was certainly different times in those days. I was born in '67, the youngest of 11, have a couple of brothers and three BIL's, all Marines, who were in Vietnam. I heard some of the same 'unwelcome' chit when I/we came home from the first Persian Gulf War, but obviously nowhere near the dissent Vietnam-era Vets had to put up with. I inked my name on that contract with the Marine Corps, of my own conscious decision back in '85 and hit it runnin' and hit the big combat sandbox in '90. After all these wars and the years have passed, I still miss my brother Marines and brothers and sisters in the armed forces who never came home under their own power. You had to have been there to understand the madness and the absolute heroism.

Didn't mean no derail my brother chainsaw junkies...just wanted to respond.

Let's get back to Big Saws.

Took a possible bad situation and got it done as safely as possible. Good deal in my book. We all live and learn everyday...playing with trees that present a different lean, different face cuts, weight distribution based on the tree itself, different scenarios, etc. I'm no logger, I'm no tree surgeon by any stretch of the imagination like most of you folks are...my job is 180 degrees from it, keeping C-17's flying. I drop a small handful of trees, they hit the Super Split HD or the 20-ton Dual Split, give them a good drying out, and the end result is heat for the house or the back patio burn pit for some grilling and beer drinking.

I like hearing folks differing opinions, etc in threads like this. I try to learn as best I can. It keeps me on my toes trying to learn how to tackle different trees and situations and most important...it makes me think. I'm the type of tree cutter that if I ain't thinking and pondering chit, I'm liable to be rushing and fugging up...and I don't want that.

Root rot got this big Oak to fall over. It was still sucking up plenty of water, as it had full foliage. It came over on a warm, and fairly windless day. The stem was pretty good size. The saw in the picture is a 288XP-W with a 28" bar.
