Best chain for hardwood?

My experience is that square falls on it's face way sooner than round. I don't grind any, and haven't used square in a good while. Hardwood is pretty much all i cut, stihl rs in clean timber and rm in sandy soil dirty river bottom stuff. I did like how square cut, but i can make a round filed chain eat and hold an edge.

semi chisel is what i would use if i could find it easier to sharpen and doesn't dull as fast like full chisel.
if you want the longest lasting chain use a carbide but one warning they cut slower.

Just wondering, anybody ever square filed a carbide tipped chain?

The ones I have (Stihl Duro3) look like they could be ground/converted to chisel and ground/filed to square.
Just thinking out loud.

I haven't had the chance to try these chains yet, but they have a really nice top plate and edge which could be made razor sharp with a diamond file, some patience and a lot of time.

I work with tungsten-carbide on a daily basis, I love it.

@mdavlee can file one hell of a square ground chain. I was very suprised the pickup on speed and it lasted a good few tanks till I hit chirt and that was it lol.

Interesting thread but I don't see any distinction made between green fresh felled hardwood or the HARD standing dead stuff with the bark sloughed off. Big difference. Most my loops are 30 degree with a 5-10 degree down angle, .030-.035 raker depth, works great for me on green oak. Even dead oak over 12" or larger stays pretty easy cutting, it's when you get to the standing dead stuff like I mentioned-under 8" or so can get a little rough on cutters, especially White Oak.

I've seen some dead standing rock hard stuff that chisel chain seemed pretty useless in. I've not tried square but doubt it would hold up very long either I use the semi in that stuff just because it's that fast to sharpen just sorta push a file through and it will go back to work. Not hating on square I just don't have experience with it

Wow nice size ,i was looking at 25 -33 hp other day ,not sure if they would pick up my logs though i don't do hay so not sure if need a lot of hp or not .
