I need more length than my 20"! What do you all feel a 6421 is capable of without beating it to death? If I had 24" I would be happy. I would also like shorter dawgs, I loose 2" with the factory ones. Saw is stock with a muff mod.

My stock 6401 usually sports a 24 these days. At one point the tip on my 24 seized and I ran a 28 that I had for a while. As long as the chain was sharp and you weren't trying to lean on it too much it wasn't a problem. I've had a 7910 top end for a couple years now waiting to go on it. Damn thing runs so well as it is I can't stand tearing it apart. That and I look for every excuse I can find to get the 394xp out. I'm also trying to keep the new 7910 covers in good shape as I have a deal worked out to get into my brother from another mother's carbon fiber shop and learn how to make molds and lay up my own carbon fiber top covers for it.

I ought to add that it was running that 28 inch bar through some 30ish inch dead standing hickory logs I brought home when moonlighting with the local tree service.

What cc is this saw were discussing? 64cc?
Maybe you could use that 28 with skip or semi-skip?
I would be concerned with how much the saw could oil efficiently.

Mine's still 64 CC for some odd reason. Nevertheless, it ate that hard dead hickory like a champ. It oils just fine at 28, but that's the longest I've had on it. As Mike said above he'll run a 36, I believe @Wilhelm runs a 36 on his 7900 as well.

My 2003. Dolmar PS-7900 oils my 36" Iggesund forest bar perfectly well, plenty of oil, no issues whatsoever!

Limited stock factory original pump, opened as much as it goes.

Noodling oak, bar fully buried!

This will amaze you. My friend and I used a Dolkita 6421 with a 32" bar and an Alaskan Saw Mill two days ago. We rip cut a 9' length of walnut log that was solid to the core and partially frozen. Ten boards were obtained, about 1.5" thick. The saw had no problems. We went through two chains of standard semi-chisel, and the saw was begging for more when we were finished.

I have bucked cut 36" dia red elm with a 6401 equipped with a BBK and a 32" bar, but this stock 6421 is just as impressive. I think you can go all the way to a 30" bar without much worry. Dub11 and Mdavlee are right on with their estimates of 28" for most work.

The PS/DCS-64xx is a way too underrated saw!

I love mine for what she is, a 64cc saw that gets work done without missing a beat.

Hence my problem... a 7910 t0p end collecting dust in a box. I need another one, preferably in makita blue, that already needs a top end so I can actually bring myself to do it.

I too have a top end without a PH needing it, a NOS NIB PS-7900 P&C to be precise.

I just keep adding saws with the desired displacement to my stable instead of converting a saw that I have to a specific cc!
I got both my PS-73xx's last year.
The PS-7300 is impressive , might even out cut my PS-7900.
I know, BLASPHEMY , but that's what she feels like!
