When my brother and I used to rebuild (hot rod) car engines we used to pull the distributor and crank the oil pump with a drill to build some pressure before we started the engine. (the distributor drives the oil pump). IIRC, we may have used a spare/modified distributor to do this (with the drive gear removed).

I’m sure you men have preoiled an automotive engine with a drill and old distributor, but you actually had oil squirt in your eye?

Anyone I’ve done has simply dribbled out everywhere. I’ve even run motors without valve covers to set lash and also, no squirting out.

I just coat it in echo oil and run em @ 50:1 for years to come...

Man, all I ever do is set a can of never-seize next to whatever I'm working on, crack the cap open so it just sits there open a little, walk away and in no time at all that stuff is all over everything... Lol

Just oil,any thing that's close and lots of it .If it doesn't blow smoke for a few minutes I fear I didn't use enough .BTW clean grease on McCulloch rod needle bearings .It will blow right off once it starts or at least it always has in the past .

IMO ...breaking in a chainsaw and a V8 are not one in the same. Anyone who has built a V8 with flat tappet lifters knows that Cam break in is a delicate and critical process that has inspired the creation of all sorts of high zinc miracle oils for break in. Some guys even mix their own cocktail. Done improperly the cam gets wiped out.

There is nothing in a saw that breaks in like a cam requiring the cushioning effect of high zinc oils. Pre lubing the engine is just to ensure nothing starts dry and the 2 stroke oil that you run everyday will accomplish this perfectly. The rings just need heat and time like in any other engine and theres not much we can do to accelerate the process that wouldn’t harm the piston or cylinder. One exception being that if you normally run 32:1, back the oil ratio down to 50:1 so there’s not as much oil on the cylinder walls. But not me, I’ll just wait.

I might add something which really doesn't apply but might be of interest .The old Caterpillar diesel engines that started with a small "pony" engine started on full oil pressure .One reason they last almost forever .Big marine and locomotive diesels use an electric pump to do the same thing .
I'm a firm believer that oil is the life blood of an engine no matter two or four cycle gasoline or diesel .Also why I still run fuel/oil at 32 to 1 ratio .

I use bar oil that leaks on the bench....WELL, I think the way you started it means more. I usually pull the choke and after the saw fires I give it a few more pull to get a little bit more mix in, then start it and let it idle for a few minutes. Just NOT rev it when first start.
