Why didn't you try cutting with the factory grind first?

A lot of chain companies are boasting about 'improved out-of-the-box' grinds, even some that are hard to duplicate with the first sharpening.

Philbert

I didn't try cutting because I don't have the saw that these chains go with yet...

I am expecting it in the next few weeks

I left one chain stock so it will be an interesting experiment to see what's what between the two

And yeah, this grind would be hard to duplicate; I would like to see the profile of the grinding wheels they use

I think what's got me scratching my head is the large number of burrs left behind by hand filing as well as the couple of cutters that were hard enough to just shrug off a new Stihl file

If the stock chain cuts great I will certainly eat humble pie and let the world know

Don't get me wrong; I WANT this chain to work and cut and last

I LIKE options

Look forward to what you find.

They don't use the same grinders we do. And some of the new ones are CNC. But the square grind guys profile their wheels, so if you really liked it . . .

Tried a 24 3/8 050 logging and got along fine! Wore it down to nubbins hand filing and never took off saw! Stretch also fine as I never had to shorten. I run max amount of good oil on chain always.

This is what I am hoping for and looking forward to!

The loop of Archer 3/8" .058 84 DL showed up yesterday. Delivered in 5 days from the lower 48 order date. So far looking over the chain. Drive links appear consistent as far as no binding or excessively loose links. Cutter teeth are fairly sharp with a very small bur in the middle of the gullet. A few gullets are cut slightly lower than most....not much but visable on close inspection. The oil grooves on the driver's are certainly different than the oil holes used by others. Better? Worse? Don't know.

The real question...will it cut and hold and edge? Should have some time this next week to know. Now that the snow is gone tons of dead downed spruce have been exposed. I generally touch up the chain after every tank or two never letting it get dull. My plan is to run this until it is noticably duller and see how it holds an edge. A little subjective but should give me an idea. Hoping it performs well. $13.21 shipped for a 24" loop is tough to beat. Anyway, I'll give an update after some trigger time on it.

Spruce being soft wood should take a long time to dull, 5 to even 20 tanks easily if treated well. I've had Husqvarna chain go pretty dull in as little as 10 cuts in hickory, but it may have been skidded. Stihl chain lasted through 3 hickory trees before noticeably dulling, and was still cutting plenty well enough through another 5-7 trees before needing sharpening.

It's interesting that your Archer cutters have filing angle marks and the cutters on the loops I bought do not

Mine are semi-chisel and yours looks to be full chisel so I guess thats the difference
My brand new semi chisel skip doesn’t have witness marks either. My chisel does

I went down to the garage and got out a loop of Oregon 72DPX semi-chisel and a 72LGX full-chisel and damned if the semi-chisel doesn't have witness marks but the full-chisel does

This is apparently some kind of far reaching international conspiracy

or

They figure folks that buy SEMI don't file their own chains or sumpin

Just got done doing some limbing and cutting up some small stuff with the MS170 with Archer full chisel 3/8 .050 . Pretty aggressive and cut better than a new loop of Oregon semi chisel. Only ran 1 tank through it but for the price the stuff seems pretty good on a small saw. I know it is not an apples to apples with full vs semi chisel but the difference was substantial.
