The plan for my current 024s project is this very setup. Along with a bit of basic tuning, I figure it'll work fairly well for a limbing & small job saw.

It would be interesting to see some 346, 550 and MS261 vids with 3/8", .325" and Picco. I think for the cutting I'm doing a shade less speed and a tougher working corner is where it's at, but I'm always down for scientific experimentation (not at my expense)... I ain't got the $$$ to piss away on it.

Video done by @MasterMech .

I find strong 50cc saws will cut fastest with standard 3/8 in hardwood, .325 is smoothest and picco cutters get a beating from the power. But in soft species this may all change completely.

It's a different kind of wood on the other side of the world. That stuff (picco) wins hands down in most wood here

It's a bit of a shame full chisel chain is not the best option here as I love the way chisel chain cuts, and enjoy sharpening it. Been running a bit of CL square lately & it holds up better imo having a better supported leading corner than the point of round full chisel. It's usually Carlton N1 or PM picco for me with small chain. I get acceptable life with PS on pole saws & TH's in clean (above ground) green wood. Majority of bucking/limbing is .404/063 or 3/8/063 semi.

When I bought my kit it was $109 CDN. After all the taxes. I paid $125CDN out the door. Well worth it IMO.
I believe cannon also sells a picco bar that fits the 026 but IIRC it's only available in 18". You would still have to get chains and a sprocket.

And 20".

it does say in the stihl book that the PS setup is ideal for harvesting pinewood. ie soft wood. and not our harder woods.. hence why i didnt go for this option with my 260/1.

Interesting info. Thanks all. Testing my 261 with different chains was one of the first things I had planned, when it gets here. Trouble is, I love picco chain on the 241. Just how much it gets flogged on a 261 will be interesting, but if it works out that regular 3/8 is best on a 261 the plus will be reducing the different rolls of chain needed (will probably sell the 241), and greater utilization of regular 3/8 rolls. Time will tell I guess.

Will be interested to see what you think of the new 261.
I'm running 3/8 on an 026 at present,and my 241,using PS,smokes it for limbing.
the wood is mainly green Grey Box,Yellow box and Stringybark, sized around 6 - 16 inches.
In dry, hard box,the 3/8 might have the edge over the PS,but in green wood, the PS is sweet

I used to try and keep chain simple and minimise things, now I don't and just stick to 050 for picco and 063 for bigger chain. Stihl usually gets it right for local conditions the way they set up a saw as far as gauge and pitch is concerned which is quite different to the way Stihl sets up a saw across the globe.

In dry wood, 20" 3/8" square Skip is nice.

Sure is. For some reason, I don't seem to notice it losing its edge too much faster than PM, unlike 3/8 rs vs rm.
I have not noticed a difference in them either. Stihl claims PS will last longer than PM.
