Why not start it. Lock the chain brake. Then put it in the vice?
The smaller saws weren't bad, so I figured I'd try the big boy. Wasn't as easy. But anyway this was my first go at stoning. You don't need much, it's easy to take the corner back too far and lose your leading edge

Every tenth adds up
Yesterday after stoning my chain I cut 41 rounds of firewood, I'm not sure what I will do with the 4 seconds I saved, but I sure feel as though I won, oh wait it took me 5 minutes to stone that chain :risas3:.
Yep. It can be the difference in winning and losing.

I will take .3 seconds in a 3 cut race any day..
And take someone's lunch money because of it.

Only reason I used the 88 is cuz it was 404 chain and that's the only bar that the chain would fit.

I suppose I could've mounted it on a smaller saw anyway, it really only needs to spin for a short amount of time so no oil is needed

Startin that 088 with 195 comp isn't fun in a vise
I had the same problem with my "Slingerized" 880, The a one handed man at Madsens drop started started it with ease. Well that made me feel pretty foolish for sure. I learned his technique and have been using it since, even on 101b's.

I always drop start, every saw, every time.

Stoning is a different story
